Hysteria Fades as Students Enlist in Observer Service

At Richmond College 18 men volunteer for air warning duty with 24 hour posts at Patterson Avenue and Three Chopt Road. Thirty professors join the effort, under War Department direction, while others consult recruiters as patriotism shapes campus response to war beyond 1917 era hysteria.

Four Richmond Men in Danger Zone Near Pearl Harbor

The Richmond College alumni report four men Les Phillips Russ Walton Roy Newton and Warren Townsend likely stationed on ships at Honolulu during the Japanese bombing. Alumni Secretary Joseph J Nettles says the college is compiling a service list. Phillips expected to graduate in 1942 and serves as an ensign on the destroyer USS Dorsey.

Westhampton College Co-ed Prom Set For February 7

The Westhampton College Athletic Association hosts a co ed prom tomorrow night from 9 to 12 in the gym with Babe Barnes and his band performing. Rita Muldowney chairs decorations as a glistening Christmas tree crowns the event. Deans Keller and Lucas attend the receiving line along with Miss Crenshaw and Association officers Badenoch and Johnson.

Westhampton Richmond Plan Holiday Party At Campus

Westhampton and Richmond College plan a combined Christmas party Sunday at 8 50 pm in the Westhampton Student Activities Building Reception Room. Mrs Frank Apperly will read a Christmas story under a glittering tree. Santa Claus will arrive with gifts for selected students as Louise Hall leads musical numbers and language clubs sing in native tongues.

Rich mond College Students Enlist in U S Service

At least five students from Rich mond College have left college to enlist in the U S military. Jed Ferebee Bill Finnegan Ted Heffner George Asbell Melvin Lubman Syd Knipe have applied or completed enlistments. Lubman and Finnegan joined the Navy while others joined the Army Air Corps. Dean Pinchbeelk confirms Lubman Ferebee and Finnegan dropped coursework. Asbell left to join the Army aviation ground crew before Pearl Harbor. Heffner and Knipe applied to be flying cadets.

Wise Guys Form One Room Club at Jeter Hall

The Four Musketeers Handley Wiley Bill Luck Henry Steigleder and Percy Gates dissolved their rooming split after a year of study and debate. They housed two rooms for sleep and study to avoid disruption. They are pledges to different fraternities and balance campus duties with three hours of study daily. All four belong to literary societies and pursue campus activities while maintaining a united motto.
