Louise Thompson and Alfred Dickinson presidents of Westhampton and Richmond College call for better conduct during Friday Convocations. Their letters say conversations disrupt speakers and mar the service, attributing the issue to thoughtlessness among students.
The two letters from student presidents urge silence during convocation. Alfred Dickinson notes whispered conversations degrade guests and the university's image. Miss Thompson condemns talking as rude and improper for Ladies to show respect to speakers.
The N I C endorses local college authority to abolish Hell Week hazing and horse play. The 28th annual session calls for cooperation with fraternities while recognizing campus public opinion governs traditions and urges mature procedures in pre initiatory activities. It praises colleges already ending hazing and urges continued campus-wide effort.
Dr. Alfred M. Nielson, economist at New York University, classifies gum chewers into five types. He describes gentle chewers like a contented cow, rhythmic chewers matching Fred Astaire, railroad chewers with clickety-click sounds, and two types who synchronize mouth movements with pencils or lecture speed.
Season ticket holders will see five one act plays directed and portrayed by students on January 15 with matinee and evening shows. Casts include Bargains in Cathay directed by Buddy Phillips and Rising Moon directed by Francis W. Tyndall featuring Frank Conner and Jerry Eptlein.
McLean Whitter announces a new orchestra to alternate with the Red and Blue band at winter basketball games. The group will feature five saxophones xylophone bass horn and drums with a guitar or banjo sought to fill the lineup.
A Biology Club initial meeting is set for Monday at 4 15 in the Biology lecture room. Attendance is required of all biology majors.
Westhampton Puppeteers repeat their Mother Goose show for the Commonwealth Chapter of the D A R at the December meeting underway at four in the tower room. The event includes a tea and a tour of new quarters in the Woman's Building with plans for a campus life production next semester to fund a Spiderette theatre in the former tea room.
A Purdue University professor accepted a stakes bet on the Indiana Purdue game after reviewing statistics and watching practice. The contest tied, and both professors repocketed their nickels, relieved by the outcome and their cautious wager.
On December 5 at 7 30 P M in the Women’s Building College Gov ernment Room Westhampton freshmen staged Rat Night without Richmond College in attendance. Bella Hertzberg led a funeral skit for William and Mary with Annabel Lumpkin reading services. Connie Atkinson played a farmer facing engine trouble while Jane Aler’s group presented a car pantomime. Ruth Brann directed a Romeo and Juliet farce with Mary Sue Carter as Romeo and Margaret Crabtree as Juliet.
Varsity Group bids new men join with formal initiation at the next meeting and a big dance on January 9 Prep Day. The club includes letter winners from major sports and will welcome first football letters this year as announced by Coach Thistlethwaite. Members listed include Clyde Francisco Arthur Gore Ames Harrington Jack Kennedy Buddy Lawless A B Merchant William Morrison James Mundy Forrest Norvell Clyde Pendleton Jack Sanford George Spears Dick Stoneburner and Fletcher Raiford manager.
The 1987 Web announces a campus innovation a Web dance with Roy Dennis orchestra Patsy Garrett directing. Subscribed students pay about fifty cents while non subscribers face around one dollar. A featured gift to a mystery girl will be presented during the Lucky Break Dance with details to follow. Subscription prices rise to 2.75 dollars on December 14.
