Preliminary elections will be held Monday April 20 at 12 30 in the Freshman Sophomore and Junior classes with four floor nominees per office and a secret ballot primary. Final elections May 7 9 to 3 in the faculty room under Student Senate supervision.
Richmond College and Westhampton join for a spring Messenger issue. Margaret Watkins of the Messenger confirms students will share reviews essays poems and excerpts plus new cuts and a corner design. Names from both colleges include Sue Cook McClure Beverly Bates and Florence Rhea Talley among others.
The Richmond Collegian opens a new news office in the Playhouse with copy editors and reporters at work. William J. Fallis announces editorial board appointments including Guthrie Brown associate editor and Stuart Crawford advisory editor. Ralph Moore Ethel Eubank lead news desks. Clyde Hardy Julia McClure copy editors. Vernon Moore Bar bette Stevenson feature editors. A B Kindon law rep. Dodson Poe Buford Brand in Henry Snellings J H Ricks oversee assisting managing editors. Hilton? no. Hil laire B Beck sports editor. Dave Ewell assistant. Thomas Johnson alumni editor. New advisory editor and copy editor offices established to reduce errors.
ODE and PDE announce initiation for new members next Monday and Tuesday. Pi Delta Epsilon banquet set in town apartment with Vernon Richardson presiding. ODK banquet to be held on campus with Frank Straus reporting on the Cincinnati convention. Faculty and alumni to address the meetings. Initiations on April 8 included Guthrie Brown and others. Tau Kappa Alpha held banquet and initiation at Richmond College with joint meeting of Richmond and Westhampton chapters.
The Richmond College Glee Club elected a two officer system with Fred Laughan as president and R Carrington Puallette as business manager. The club plans its home concert on May 31 featuring Romeo and Juliet and a selection of songs at Jenkins Amps Theatre. University Players star Joseph Holland will rehearse Richard II in Richmond from May 1 after study in London and earlier work with Katherine Cornell.
Preliminary debating speaking reading and spelling contests of the southeastern division were held yesterday in the Physics building. About 130 representatives from twenty high schools competed as finalists will meet in Charlottesville May 10 and 11.
Students should consult faculty advisers promptly to plan courses for the coming year. After advisers approve proposed courses, bring memorandum slip to the Dean's office and prepare cards for the session. Sophomores must choose major and minor and file the approved major slip.
Dr. Marcus W. Jernigan, history professor at Chicago and Epoch Series author, spoke to students and friends in the college Biology lecture room at 8 16 P M on Monday April 15 The tour includes northern states with lectures at colleges in the region His topic was New Dealism and Social Planning During the Revolution and he outlined a single change theory attributed to Benjamin.
Miss Helen Caulfield president of Mortar Board announces the annual tapping ceremony on April 27 at 7 30 in the Greek Theater. Junior Class members will wear white as the service celebrates leadership scholarship and service.
West coast colleges test a new campus greeting system this semester. Stanford students must greet strangers while Richmond College fans recall the old southern custom of speaking to everyone on campus. columnists note the novelty and awkwardness of meeting blondes in class.
The Virginia Academy of Science holds its thirteenth session at the University of Richmond May 3 to 5 with Dr. Alexander Wetmore as principal speaker presenting an illustrated lecture on explorations in Hawaii and Pacific islands. The program includes sectional meetings in eight divisions and field trips to Dismal Swamp and Amelia deposits, drawing about 600 attendees from Virginia colleges and schools. Wetmore, noted ornithologist and Smithsonian official, will discuss bird life and hold roles with the Smithsonian and other organizations.
Coach Mac Pitt, whose undefeated cage squad drew national notice last winter, will head the basketball division of the coaching school here per a statement by Coach Thistlethwaite.
The Student Senate approved a five new members to join two holdovers for the next academic year. New appointees include Redwood Council Sidney Matthews and Ernest Greatheart with other seniors juniors and a sophomore rep named Gaius Giggs and Stuart Crawford. Existing members Will iam Grenoble Billy Ballou Fillmore Sanford Dave Scott and William Fallis retire. The council forms to enforce the Honor Code established in 1832 and begins duties when school opens next September.
The Interfraternity Dance Committee set June 10 and 11 for the finals. Negotiations include NBC acts Red Nichols and Reggie Childs and CBC orchestras Joe Hayner and Leon Belasco. High price options like Jan Garber or the Dorsey Brothers are possible but ticket cap at five dollars may block them. The committee aims for a large orchestra at a reasonable price.
A lively dance featuring high school seniors and next year's freshmen drew cheers and jeers from college men in Richmond. Envious upperclassmen watched as younger dancers performed intricate steps, with the event earning enough money to fund the upcoming Junior Prom.
Plans completed for an elaborate reenactment of a Civil War battle in Fredericksburg Virginia. The event runs April 28 to May 2 with cadets from VMI and a Marine Corps contingent staging daily actions.
