In Sioux County the September effort aims to raise funds for war needs with a $1.189 million target in one month and a county total near $82 million in agricultural income last year. Citizens are urged to exceed spring quotas by at least 60 percent and to buy bonds on September 9 and through banks if away.
St Johns Lutheran School opened Monday August 30 with 36 students. Upper grades are taught by Ruth Goodeman of Oak Harbor Ohio. Primary grades taught by Lois Pietz of Ottumwa. Mrs H G Meyer is on the sick list.
Alma resident P M Kruse's daughter gathered hail stones from a Sunday storm enough to fill a refrigerator. Stones reportedly reached the size of a hen egg and were kept overnight. This marks the area’s third severe hail storm, though most farmers say crops are now out of danger.
Sioux County launches a countywide effort from October 4 to 9 to enroll rural boys and girls in 4-H clubs. County Extension Director Chester O C Benson says the statewide campaign, aimed at boosting food production and conservation participation, will be organized locally by extension staff with support from community leaders.

Mr and Mrs Herman Loch and their children from Steen Minnesota along with Mrs Maggie Hollander were dinner guests Sunday at the John Hollander home in a social gathering.
Mr and Mrs Howard Harmon announce the birth of a 73 pound son Lester Leroy on Tuesday evening with Grandma Van Roekel assisting. Mr and Mrs Abe H Van Roekel report twins a son and daughter born Thursday morning with Grandma Van Zee assisting.
Mr and Mrs Martin Dokter and their daughters Dorothy and Shir departed by train Tuesday for their home in Holland Nebraska after visiting at the Scheider home and with relatives.
Mr and Mrs John D Landhuis hosted a dinner Sunday for relatives honoring Mr and Mrs H D Landhuis on their 49th anniversary. Attendees included Connie Koerselman and family from Orange City and Herman Koerselman and family from George. The Bosman reunion gathered Monday at Sheldon Park with many relatives present.

The Boyden Public School reports total elementary enrollment of 100 identical to last year and 66 in the high school, with freshmen and sophomores at 20 each, juniors 12, seniors 14. A new gym floor was installed over summer after dry rot, improved structure, court lines marked, and gym shoes urged for students to protect the surface. Tryouts for the high school chorus are underway to form the group promptly.
Washington dispatch reports 2,000,000 volunteers and millions on the home front rallying to back the Third War Loan campaign aiming to raise 15 billion dollars. Secretary Morgenthau urges tightened belts and greater sacrifice as funds fund frontline needs and victory. The September drive extends offerings including Series E F G Savings Bonds along with Treasury Notes and other debt instruments.
The noon air raid alert marked the start of Boyden's Third War Loan Campaign. War Savings Chairman Grooters and Civilian Defense Chair H. M. Scholten lead the effort, urging strong community support to back the war and spare local boys from hardship.
Jack Rensink Bert Nash and Hank Van Roekel visited Sheldon last Saturday evening as business callers delivering messages and checking local inquiries.
Last Thursday marked the 80th birthday of L Rens Sr a long respected Boyden resident and farmer who later retired. Family gathered for the observance and the Rens plan to move to Orange City where they have bought a new home.
Mrs Helen Vanderburg presented the Grimer Institute of International Relations report to Hawarden Women's Club members during a guest dinner Wednesday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Nick Donkersloot and Ilene visited Wednesday afternoon in the Steve De Jong home near Orange City.
