Iowa Public Service to Raise Electric Rates Nov. 2

The Iowa Public Service Company will raise electric rates by one to five mills starting November 2 as inflation drives costs higher. Manager W. O. Luther cited payroll, fuel, copper, and taxes increases since 1945 and said about eight percent more revenue is expected, with daily home costs up roughly one cent. The company aims to fund new equipment and meet rising demand while hoping inflation cools and rates can be reduced in the future.

The Boarding House Reach Comedy at Maxwell Family

The Junior Class play The Boarding House Reach centers on Wilbur Maxwell who wants a bicycle and proposes opening a boarding house while his parents are away. The house fills with guests, the parents return to chaos, and Pop is mistaken for a criminal while Wilbur becomes a hero and secures the bicycle. The cast includes Wilbur Maxwell Dorothy Oldenkamp Betty Lou Maxwell John Maxwell and other students.

European Relief Program Set Up in Sioux Center Drive

Tractor blaze at Leonard Ensink farm near Boyden

The Boyden Fire Department was dispatched to Leonard Ensink farm Monday around 1 pm to battle a cornfield fire sparked by leaves contacting a tractor exhaust. Ensink escaped the tractor before a gas tank exploded and helped douse the flames as crews arrived. the tractor wiring burned but total damage could not be fully assessed.

Injured in Farm Accident at Corn Picker

Mr. Art Uittenbogaard received injuries Thursday after his hand was caught in a corn picker. One fingernail was torn off and several stitches were required on the other fingers.

Graveside rites for Herbert Dean noted in Boyden

Graveside services were held at Boyden Cemetery Saturday afternoon for Herbert Dean of Harris. He was a former Boyden resident and brother of Evelyn and Clara Dean. Attending from out of town were John Veenscholten of Des Moines and George Dean with sons of Nashua. Mrs Tony Moermond became suddenly ill Sunday and is in critical condition.

America Sings At Boyden Public School Program

The Boyden Public School presented its first program of the year titled America Sings under Miss Schol. The show featured a narrator depicting the Statue of Liberty and numbers spanning Indians to the Gay Nineties with performances by a girls trio a boys quartet a rhythm band and the Girls Glee Club among others. The program closed with the entire cast singing Town and America. Relatives of local residents were noted with polio cases affecting two Von Dies children of Valley Springs SD.
