Jack Dethmers Garner and 21 Iowa farmers toured eight European countries on a personally funded trip to observe postwar conditions. He described widespread hardship in England France and Scotland with rationing and poverty amid scarce fuel and food.
County AAA committees call farmers to craft 1948 ACP plans prioritizing soil conservation and yield. Emphasis on green manures lime and phosphate, longer pasture seasons, and practices to boost production with minimal soil loss. Local adjustments rely on farmers and elected committeemen to meet regional soil needs.
About sixty adults attended the 4-H kick-off event at Sioux Center High School last Tuesday evening to learn campaign plans. Harlan Berger outlined the program with Mr Geiger, emphasizing township 4-H committees and parent outreach to recruit new members. County Extension Director J E Ellis expects over a hundred rural participants and many townships to finalize plans soon.
The American Legion Auxiliary will meet at the home of Mrs L V Grooters on Tuesday evening October 21. Those interested in joining are urged to attend.
A group of relatives and friends from Hull and Ashton gathered for a Sunday supper at the Henry Heusinkveld residence. Members listed include Mr. and Mrs. Francis De Graaf and family, Mr. and Mrs. L C Van Batavia, Mr. Dick Heusinkveld, Mr. Bert Van Batavia, and Mrs. Henry Heusinkveld and daughter.
A Sheldon Sun report details that Id Van Zanten, a salesman for Western Grocer of Sheldon, was assaulted Thursday evening October 2 near Remsen. He lost $150 cash from his car and was found in a ditch hours later. he regained consciousness in a farmer’s yard and was hospitalized in Orange City.
On Friday October 24 junior league players receive a free ticket to the Western Union Homecoming football game at Le Mars. They meet at the home of Tuff Grovers at 5 45 p m sharp. The American Legion sponsors the outing and a post game lunch will be served.
Rev. John F. Schortinghuis and Mr. John Haspers came home last Tuesday evening from College Springs Iowa where they attended a three day Iowa Synod meeting of the United Presbyterian Church of North America.
The bulletin lists church activities including Sabbath School at 10:00 p m with a lesson Faith In Operation and worship at 11:00 a m with sermons Near Not Far and Plowing in Hope. Junior Missionary Society meets at 11:00 a m and Young People's Study Class at 7:30 p m Tuesday. Bible classes for children run Saturday 1:15 p m to 4:00 p m. The note ends with a call to attend church on Sunday.
