John Scholten writes to the Boyden Reporter from a French village near a 200 year old chateau. He describes a 13 day transatlantic crossing, calm seas, and distant landfalls. He notes six weeks in France with snow on mountaintops, and paints a picture of village life with stone houses and small farms.
The board of health and town council met to extend influenza controls after a spike in cases. A new quarantine covers schools churches and public meetings until further notice and homes with illness will be placarded. The measure took effect Tuesday afternoon. Farmers Co operative Association received a carload of hard coal and sold it in 800 pound lots to early buyers. Boyden’s first coal delivery of the fall.
Iowa marks War Sunday with all residents urged to attend a worship service honoring American soldiers. Clergy statewide invited to cooperate as families join in prayers and a sermon recognizing those who have sacrificed for the war effort.

The Borden Branch American Red Cross held its annual meeting Monday evening at the town hall with a small crowd due to the influenza scare. Directors A A Kuyper H Luymes Rev Van Lummel Rev Megchelsen Paul T McCrum were reelected for three years, and officers were reappointed: Rev A J Van Lummel president Rev Karl Megchelsen vice president Mrs Chas Bergman secretary W H Eddy treasurer. The secretary read the year’s report, to be published next issue, and a new ruling allows labels for overseas soldier packages requested by November 21, with packages sent by November 30.
Government notice from Des Moines Iowa dated November 9 1918 urges counties communities and individuals to reach a fifteen million dollar war savings stamp quota by cash purchase on the upcoming sale day November 28 1918. Emphasizes buying at regular voting places to support the war effort and honor soldiers and sailors with a 100 percent commitment before Thanksgiving.
