Cal Sticker laments Memorial Day while honoring unknown heroism and the bushido of sacrifice. He recalls veterans who remember a buddy who died in place of theirs and praises the honor of resting in distant Flanders Fields. The piece frames remembrance as shared national meaning among Americans.
Miss Phyllis Steunenberg daughter of Rev and Mrs Henri Steunenberg receives a scholarship award. The ceremony honors her academic achievement and recognizes the Steunenbergs for their support.
Pupils from St John school north of Boyden and teachers Mr and Mrs Hintz traveled Friday on an excursion. The trip included visits to Sheldon Soybean Plant Molmen Dairy Police Station Post Office Skewis Hat Chery and Rays Bowl lunch. They then rode to Hull via depot to tour Co op Creamery and Kooiker Manufacturing Co before returning home.
Rock Valley justice of the peace James L. Smith fined Robert Wolfswinkel of Hull ten dollars and costs for driving across the park and a defective muffler. Albert Keizer of Hull received a hundred-dollar fine for reckless driving and disturbing the peace. Four witnesses testified. Other hearings included several five dollar fines for various milling and stop sign violations and two dollar charges for proper parking.
Miss Fannie Schut of Sioux Center is honored with the Mrs Good Neighbor Award for outstanding community service. The recognition highlights Schut's local outreach and volunteer efforts in the Sioux Center area.

Henry Sandbulte aged year and a half, son of Mr and Mrs Bernard Sandbulte, escaped without serious harm after a trailer loaded with ground feed backed over him. He was taken to Sioux Center hospital for X rays but returned home with no internal injuries reported.
About 1200 students will receive degrees at the State University of Iowa commencement on June 12 in Iowa City. Rabbi Hillel Silver of Cleveland will speak, and University President Virgil M. Hancher will confer the degrees. Regular and air force commissions will be awarded to ROTC graduates. The medical convocation is held June 1.
The 3rd Annual Mrs Good Neighbor Day will be in Sioux City on Monday June 1 with a noon luncheon at Martin's Store Tearoom for the awards. The honor recognizes local county volunteers who have contributed time and talent to welfare and youth groups.
Most Boyden business places will close all day Saturday May 30 for Memorial Day observance. Only Farmers Co op Oil Station Boyden Standard Station and Arlo s lunch will stay open a few hours in the morning. The Creamery will work as needed. Services begin 9 30 A M at the Boyden School Auditorium. Stores open Friday evening May 29 until 9 P M and closed Saturday May 30.
A memorial verse honors Lt Howard Sake who died a year ago. The lines speak of his voice in the rolling air and his presence in sunrise and sunset as the family signs the tribute.
Conservation officer Joe Hopkins spotted large bullhead schools while flying over Lost Island Lake. Fisheries biologists Earl Rose and Tom Moen conducted a low altitude aerial survey, noting hundreds of nine to ten inch bullheads in circular and hourglass formations near the surface. The phenomenon, affecting half the lake, remains without a known cause and involved no anglers.
To Move To Boyden Me. and Mrs Arie Bomgaars of Rock Valley will move to the Richard Van Zanten home owned by Peter Baartman Sr in the next few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Van Zanten will move to Denver Colo. where he will attend Summer School. Mr. Bomgaars will work for the county. He has been employed with the Van Zee brothers at Rock Valley.
Mr and Mrs Harold Schafer were accompanied home by Mr and Mrs Harry Stiles from Savannah Missouri Tuesday after seven weeks away. They took their guests to Sioux City to board a train bound for Malta Montana.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Postma hosted a Sunday afternoon luncheon at their home in honor of their son Rodger on his first birthday. Attending were his grandparents Mr and Mrs Rens Postma of Sheldon and Mr and Mrs Fred Wilts of Archer.
The PeterSon Vy Scout Camping Area hosts a Camporee as Boy Scouts begin their camping season. The report notes boys settling into the native hills and woods after a day of tramping, with the Boyden troop absent this year and hoping to join next at Hawarden State Park.
Ed Schmidt, chairman of the Sioux County PMA Committee, announced that township PMA elections will be held in July with mail voting again this year. Voters will choose three community committeemen, two alternates, and a county convention delegate to be seated August 1 in Orange City. Balloting runs July 16 to 24, with county committees to be formed at the August convention.
The Home Mission Circle honored Mrs. Richard Van Zanten and Mrs. G J Van den Berg with a hankie shower Thursday afternoon in the church basement.
SICK Carey Lee Smit son of Mr and Mrs Casey Smit underwent a tonsilectomy at the Sheldon hospital Wednesday morning.

The annual school picnic will be held on Friday May 29 with grades meeting at 11 o clock and high school at 10 30. Parents and friends are invited to eat at the school at 12.
The State Conservation Commission sold its Navion airplane for $10,895 under competitive bidding to Paul Peterson of the Altoona Aviation Corporation in Altoona Pennsylvania. The aircraft, bought in 1950 for $14,496, had 453 hours and logged the equivalent of 70 000 road miles on Commission business.

Mr and Mrs Ernie Kammlade and daughter Marilynn with Miss Arlene Kruse attended a spring music recital at the Franklin school auditorium Le Mars. Marilynn accompanied by Arlene played the flute solo she performed at the State Music Contest during the Parkinson home gathering.
Iowa State College extension engineer Dale Hull notes growing interest in liquid nitrogen fertilizers used as liquid or gas. Liquid nitrogen may be applied by farmers or custom operators using regular spray equipment with safeguards. Anhydrous ammonia requires special equipment since it is stored as a liquid under pressure and applied as a gas. Custom operators have done most applications in Iowa.

The Bride Club and Bridge Club met Tuesday at Mrs. Herman Meester's home. A dessert luncheon followed bridge. At the end Mrs. G J Vanden Berg received a hankie shower as she plans to leave the club for an unspecified move.
