Consumers Can Solve Dairy Surplus Problem

One of agriculture's biggest problems is also one of the easiest to solve. The solution lies not with government or its officials but with millions of Americans who can and should drink an extra glass or two of milk each week and eat a few additional pieces of butter.

Government Holds Large Dairy Surplus Aims to Boost Consumption

The government reports over 1.32 billion pounds of dairy products in storage bought to support prices at 90 percent of parity. Surpluses filled warehouses instead of reaching consumers, and authorities urge increased consumption to restore balance between dairy production and demand. Since 1945 per capita fluid milk and cream use fell by 47 pounds, while butter intake fell by 45 pounds. officials say expanding consumption is needed to meet dietary needs and prevent shortages. Milk is touted as a near perfect food for children and youths.
