The annual Summer Round-up for children entering Kin garden next fall will be held today in two sessions at Hull and Boyden. Tooth examinations by Dr. A G Dittmer are free. other physicals cost 3 dollars at Dr K R Swanson in Hull, with inoculation costs covered by the P T A.
Belle Kroese daughter of Mr and Mrs Ivan Kroese Hull is among fifteen girls who received caps at the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing ceremony held at Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Rev Russell Olson gave the address and Miss Gladys Holm presented caps as the class motto The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge was chosen. A large crowd attended the event to honor the new graduates.
The Boyden Hull Senior Band performed at the State Large Group Music Contest in Greattinger Iowa and received a Division III rating. Due to district reorganization the group competed in Class C though often a Class D presence. They played Hall of Fame Concert March and Dublin Holiday Overture and look to grow the instrumental program ahead of Tulip Festival May 20 and Memorial Day services.
The Hull Business and Professional Men’s Club will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday May 11 at 8 00 p m in the Legion Room of the Community Memorial Building. Agenda includes routine business and final plans for the Memorial Day Horse Races. Members urged to attend.
The Ladies Aid Society of the First Reformed Church plans a Mother's Day program on Thursday May 5 at 2 00 pm at the church. The program committee will present the topic and hostesses include Mrs Sylvester Rensink Mrs John Sitter Mrs Wm Oldenkamp and Mrs Leonard Rensink. Members will share a gift exchange with their Sunshine Friend.
Joe Miersma has become sales representative for State Bond and Mortgage Co. He completed training in New Ulm Minnesota and joins the National Association of Security Dealers. He will represent the company in Sioux county.
The United Presbyterian Church of Boyden hosts the Junior High Youth Rally of Northwest Iowa Zone I on May 7 from 2 30 to 8 30 p.m. with a banquet at 5 30 p.m. About 80 guests are expected. Miss Zambu Roberts of Kenya Africa, a Westmar College student, will speak. Mothers of local youth will prepare and serve dinner.
The 10th Annual Spring Rally of the Northwestern Iowa Group of the Women’s Missionary Federation of the American Lutheran Church takes place May 5 at Immanuel Lutheran Church Rock Rapids Iowa. Guest speaker Frau Freda Niemann of Germany will discuss Women’s Work in Germany and show slides on prison work. A pageant “From Hence Have We Come” narrates the group’s history. Morning session 10:00 am. afternoon 1:30 pm. luncheon served. Visitors welcome.
Albert Vink 81 of Orange City Iowa died Monday from a heart attack at Sioux Center Hospital Nursing Wing where he had been admitted a week earlier. Funeral services will be held today Thursday at 1 30 p m from the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City.
The Christian School Circle will sponsor a Silver Tea next Tuesday May 10 at the Christian Reformed Church at 2 00. A short program will be presented. All are welcome.
The Sheridan Homemakers will meet Friday May 6 at 1 30 PM at Mrs John Sas Jr's home with co host Mrs Chester De Boer. Roll call theme A Mothers Day Gift I Remembered. Lesson on Flower Pot Making by Mrs Sylvester Rensink. Attendees asked to bring a 1 lb coffee can or straight sided glass can four cloth pins shell macaroni small size and a jar of Elmer glue.
The regular Wesman-Koele Post No. 380 American Legion meeting will be held Thursday May 5 at 8 00 p m in Hull Iowa at the Community Memorial Building Legion Room. Officers up for election include Commander and Vice Commander along with Adjutant Finance Officer and Post Chaplain.
The Northwest Association for Retarded Children will meet Thursday May 5 at 8 00 p m in the Home Economics Room of Sheldon High School. Officers will be elected and 1960 dues are requested if not yet paid. Coffee hour will follow. Mrs Peter Fonkert Cor Sec
At the Saturday drawing three names were drawn for 25 dollars each. Mrs Arie Steen hoeven and Mr Harvey Vermeer were absent while LeRoy Rohlfs collected his 25 dollars at Arie's Lunch. Another three draws for 25 dollars each planned for Saturday May 7 at 8 30 p m.
The Rev Richard H Staple CROP director for Iowa visited Sioux Center April 28 to outline the 1960 Fall campaign The 1959 CROP output included 291354 lb corn oil and 65486 lb corn syrup shipped overseas for food in Korea and Hong Kong Sioux County led Iowa in total CROP contributions and aims for 150000 bushels of corn this year Madison County already pledged 6000 bushels with several counties set to follow.
Jay Vos becomes the new teller at Farmers Savings Bank in Boyden joining from Worthington Minnesota where he served as teller for a year and eight months. He is married with a daughter and will move to Boyden once an apartment is available.
The Boyden-Hull High School senior class play Let Me Out of Here will be presented in the Hull Community Memorial Building Thursday May 5 at 8 00 p m Students and locals are invited to attend the performance in Hull Iowa
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Schmith of Paulina Iowa will mark their twenty fifth wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday May 15 from 2 to 5 p m at their home. Mrs Schmith was formerly Esther Techen of Hull.
The Home Mission Circle of the First Reformed Church will hold a Mother's Day Program on Tuesday May 10 at 8 00 p m in the church basement Devotions by Mrs John Siderius Hostesses The Social Committee All members are asked to bring their mother or a friend.
Wegman Keele Unit No. 380 of Hull Iowa will hold its regular meeting on Thursday May 12 at 8 00 pm in the Legion Room of the Community Memorial Building all members urged to attend
Boyden-Hull won three of four relays to beat Rock Valley 57 42 at Hull. Oelrich swept shot put and discus, Doorenbos tied for high jump, and Doorenbos with teammates Graham and Grooters led several winning relays. Next is the District Meet at Milford for 150 to 300 enrollment schools.
The Town Council of Hull accepted the resignation of Gerard J. Van Pykeren at a Monday meeting. He plans to take a full time job after leaving town employment. An advertisement for applications to fill the vacancy appears elsewhere in this paper.
The Hull Bowling Leagues will hold their annual Athletic Banquet on Monday May 9 in the basement of the Community Memorial Building Hull. Dinner at 6 30 p.m. served by American Legion Auxiliary members. A program will award trophies and patches with talks and entertainment.
The Welcome and Center Township Homemakers will meet on Tuesday May 10 at 1 15 p.m. at the Sioux Center Town Hall. Hostesses are Mrs Sam Altena and Mrs Henry Van Roekel. It is a finish up meeting with roll call plant or bulb exchange.
Ed Mellema son of Andrew and Mrs Mellema of Hull and a Western Christian High senior spoke at Buena Vista College Circle K tenth annual appreciation banquet in Storm Lake on April 27. He presented his oration Has Basketball Reached Excess, following the State Speech Contest held last March with Western faculty member Mr De Jager accompanying him.
John Kooiker, an eighth grade pupil at the local Christian Grammar School, won first place in local county and Ninth District Poppy Poster contests sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. His poster will be displayed in the local drug store window. He previously won state honors in the 1959 Fire Prevention Poster Contest despite never having art lessons.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 272 in Boyden Iowa will hold a bake sale Saturday May 7 at Peters Store starting at 1 00 p m. A variety of baked goods will be offered for sale.
The Boyden Commercial Club dinner is set for Monday May 9 at 12 noon in the Legion Hall. All local business men are invited for the regular monthly gathering and a strong turnout is hoped for.
This week in Boyden Iowa construction started on two new structures. A Co-Op Association office rises at Railroad and Main on the former hotel site. Nearby the home of Mr and Mrs Leroy Van Meeteren begins with a completed basement. Additional homes and a large feed mill at the Co-Op Elevator are also under construction.
The Boyden Hull groups at Graettinger earn top marks in Class C. Girls Glee Club cited Division I by all judges. Boys Glee Club earns mixed scores with strong praise. Mixed Choir also rated I II II by judges. Director Tom Rosenberger leads with accompanists Sally De Koster Ruth Ringenoldus Hester Zoet.
