Patriotic Meeting Held Saturday at Town Hall

An enthusiastic Liberty Loan meeting was held last Saturday at the town hall. Weather kept many farmers away while Hon. John Morris opened the session and introduced Mayor Klay of Orange City and Geo. T. Hatley who urged support for the war effort. Sheridan township canvas planned with a 25 member committee to go by automobile.

New Minister and Popular Holland Girl Are Married

A pretty Thursday wedding at 4 pm at 129 E. 9th St. united Stella E Veenschoten of Holland to H Michael Veenschoten of Boyden Ia. The ceremony featured Mendelssohn and a reception followed with musical solos and duets. They plan missionary work in Amoy China after a trip to New York for a church conference.

Red Cross Organizes Buyden Branch Effort

Community members meet with Mrs. F. E Frisbee to plan a Sheldon Red Cross Buyden branch. The goal is universal membership and making comfort items for soldiers, with another meeting to form a permanent group and appoint officers and committee chairs.

Five Year Old Burned by Boiling Water Incident at Farm

A five year old boy, son of Peter Barendrecht, on the D. H. Brinkman farm, was severely scalded last Monday when a two year old spilled a pail of hot water carried by his mother. The burn is serious but not currently critical.

War brothers travel to Wisconsin after father’s sudden death

Henry and William War Rowsky were summoned to Wisconsin on Friday due to their father’s sudden death. Paul Moorman, employed at Arch er Creamery, assists at the local creamery during the brothers’ absence.

Iowa State College Grants Historic 1917 Graduation

The 1917 commencement at Iowa State College awards the largest class yet with 479 diplomas and certificates. Agriculture leads with 149 degrees, engineering 125, home economics 91, economics 22, veterinary medicine 3, plus 47 masters, 9 professional, and 3 doctoral degrees. Notable graduates from Sioux County include Harry M. Gregg Hawarden animal husbandry and Harold S. Irwin Ireton animal husbandry.

Mrs Van Houte and Daughter Visit Sheldon on Friday

Mrs Van Houte and her daughter were callers at Sheldon Friday afternoon. John Stientjes sustained a broken right arm last week trying to crank a Ford car. He is recovering as well as can be expected.

Boyden Buys $23800 Liberty Loan Bonds

By Wednesday morning Boyden had subscribed for $23300 of the $24000 Liberty Bonds their allotment of the $2,000,000,000 government loan. Falling only $700 short which will probably be sold before the last day June 15th. Monday morning about eight automobiles carrying about twenty five men canvassed Sheridan township in the interests of the bonds and many farmers responded liberally making the successful sale possible.
