Albert Kooy was chosen as the new manager at the People's Store by the Board of Directors after six and a half years with the business in Boyden. Previously he worked in the Netherlands in dry goods with his father and brother. The Reporter congratulates him on his advancement and notes his dedication and integrity.
Following his wife’s death Gerrit Vanden Bosch schedules a closing out sale for March 9 on the Hansen farm southeast of Boyden. Sale bills were printed Monday and the notice urges attendance. the ad also lists pure bred Buff Leghorn hatching eggs offered by A Vander Wilt Jr in Boyden.
Farmers Co-Operative Association shareholders held a meeting to consider extending the charter but postponed the issue to the next annual meeting. A proposal to form an independent Farmers Gas and Oil Company was discussed with stock at 10 dollars per share and solicitors to sell shares. An organizing meeting is set for March 10 at Boyden Town Hall to form the new company, inviting all current shareholders and new subscribers.
The Independent School District of Boyden holds its annual election Monday March 14 at the town hall. Voters select two directors one for three years to replace Ralph Smit and one for one year to fill C A DeValois vacancy. Rudolph Henning has served but can only be appointed to the next annual meet. Both Smit and Henning are praised for their work and urged retention.
The Fred Hansen sale held last week Tuesday totaled 4700 with a strong crowd of bidders. The top cow sold for 3135 and the team brought 295, while other items also sold well. Col Meylink served as auctioneer.
A petition signed by 399 Sheldon residents requests a $90,000 bond issue to build equip and operate a municipal light plant. The City Council tabled the petition for further consideration last week.
Board of directors of the new Holland Old Folks home at Sheldon decides to open the institution on April 1. Local social notes mention Jenni Brinks and John Horling’s wedding in Sioux Falls and current community activities.
Three year old Robert Huibregtse of Matlock died after gasoline spilled from a can during stove filling ignited by a stove flame. His younger sister survived as parents and fire crews fought a pantry blaze. funeral plans set for Thursday in Mallock and Hull.
Wm. Jansen of a Hawkeye truck collided head on with a Buick driven by Mr. Bert Vande Steeg near Hull last Thursday at about 7 15. Both cars were badly damaged and the occupants of both vehicles were seriously injured except Jansen. Vande Steeg suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung. his daughter lacerated leg. another passenger had a facial gash. All were taken to Maris hospital. Vande Steeg’s condition improved after initial fears. Both drivers were without lights, violating traffic laws.
The February 22 Washington Birthday celebration marked three births in the town. Mr. and Mrs. Benj. R. DeJong welcomed a son, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Fuhr a son, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bosman a daughter, a rare holiday occurrence in a small area.
