Farewell Picnic Honoring Brinks Family

Fire Destroys Hay Barn Near Hospers Monday

A large hay and straw filled barn on George Kersten's farm three miles north of Hospers burned Monday as volunteers from five communities fought to save adjacent buildings. A cement block cattle shed was destroyed. farmhouse and other structures were kept under control. Combustion is suspected. fire seen about 2 p.m. No livestock in the barn. The building was insured. William Kersten of Sheldon is the owner’s father.

Grooters Family Reunion at Sheldon Park Draws 111 Relatives

The Grooters family reunion was held at Sheldon park on Friday August 23 with a picnic dinner. One hundred eleven relatives attended and officers were elected for the coming year. Farm Bureau Women to Tour St Paul in September

Farm Bureau Women plan a two day trip September 24 and 25 to St Paul departing Orange City with pickups at Million Dollar Corner Sioux Center Perkins Corner Hull Boyden and Sheldon. The itinerary includes hotel stay at Ryan, visits to General Mills Toni Company and a children's snowsuit maker, a St Croix River boat cruise, dinner at Lowell Inn Stillwater and trout supper, a second day tour of St Paul, coffee with The Farmer editor and shopping time before returning home. Interested members should contact the Farm Bureau Office in Orange City for arrangements.

William Van Sloten Dies of Heart Attack in California

William Van Sloten 71 of Bellflower California died at home after a heart attack. Survived by wife and children, two brothers Lam bert Van Sloten Hull and John Van Sloten Doon, and five sisters. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary on August 23 at the Christian Reformed church in Bellflower. Attendees from the area included Mrs Otto Bajema Rock Valley and Mrs Walter Groeneweg Hull.

Northwestern College in Orange City Iowa opens registration for evening school Tuesday September 17 at 6 30 PM in the Registrar Office. Dr Herman Nelson joins the teaching staff to offer Anglo America Geography a 16 week three hour course open to experienced teachers for certificate renewal or a Bachelor's degree. Magazine Drive Aims To Fund School Stage Lighting

Boyden High and Junior High promote annual magazine subscriptions with Curtis Publishing’s Walter Polk visiting September 5 to explain the drive. Subscriptions cost the usual amount and the school earns 30 to 50 percent for its use. Prizes deduct from top sellers, and this year proceeds fund lighting for the new stage.

They visited Morningside College Grandview Park KSCJ radio station courthouse Floyd Monument and Sioux City Airport then dined at Bishop's Cafe and watched a Capitol Theatre movie.
