The Iowa State Fair opened early with record entries and the largest entertainment program in its history. Livestock judging started, rodeo kicked off, and a packed eight day slate includes Paul Whiteman and other bands, auto and horse races, thrills, fireworks, a ten acre midway, and the Show of the Century.
Honored as Picnic Misses Rutbye and Maud Jackson and Mrs H A Bolstad were guests of honor at a Hills Park picnic near Sheldon on Thursday evening. Attendees included Mesdames De Vries Schorting Ayis deke Van Dispen J W Meyn Starkweather Andrew Rosenboom Vanderburg Victor Powers and Fred Wagner of Sanborn and Misses Loretta Wier Nellie Haley of Hull.
Rev Merton De Velder will lead the morning service at United Presbyterian Church of Boyden on Sabbath August 27. He is a son of Mr and Mrs Dick De Velder of Boyden. Willis Vanderburg sails for a two week Denver vacation. The Csehy Musical Messengers perform sacred music for three nights August 23 28 25 at 8 pm at Hull Opera House. Free seats available. Chris Kalberg tester visited Jack Dethmers in Washington Minnesota over the weekend. Mrs Alela Cameron of Gretter, granddaughter of P M Webb who owned Boyden land and granted rail right of way, called in Friday.
At a August 21 meeting the Northwestern Junior College faculty appointed Frances R. Starkey of Humphrey Nebraska to a Commercial position. Starkey holds a Masters in English with eight years of teaching and is pursuing a Masters in Commerce. The move aims to place the Commerce Department on an accredited footing for both college and academy work.
Mrs Martha Rosenboom returned Thursday from a visit in Sibley with her daughter Mrs Bill Bothof.
The Boyden School invites high school pupils to the office Friday September 4 between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM to register and arrange class schedules. The procedure aims to assess individual problems, determine class sizes, and plan texts and materials. The faculty is complete, with emphasis on music and advanced training for graduating eighth graders seeking business paths.
Rural teachers must attend a meeting at the Orange City Court House on Wednesday August 376th at 9 00 A M to receive supplies and hear Mr Steffey speak on the new Iowa plan for teaching work type reading The session ends at noon so attendees may visit the Fair Several 8th grade invitations and ribbons are unclaimed and readers are asked to send correct addresses Invitations and ribbons will be sent to Hawarden Christian Orange City and St John s Parochial graduates this week
The community learns that Dr. Pollock suffered a stroke affecting his right side Thursday evening. Dr. Will Van Zanten and nurse Jeanette Van Houte attended him. Family members including daughter and her husband Mr and Mrs Lee Dreckmann visited Iowa City to be with the Pollocks. His condition is improving and the community wishes for a speedy recovery.
Mr and Mrs Tony Vander Wilt Mr and Mrs Henry Bos man S G Vanden Brink and son Logan Mr and Mrs Henry Heusinkfeld Henry Van Houte and daughter Betty were among the Boyden people attending the Legion Convention in Sioux City Tuesday.
Mrs Arthur E Miller and Mrs Jake Van Diepen entertained Tuesday at the Miller home in honor of Maud and Ruthye Jackson. Prizes went to Mrs Wm Meyn in Bridge and Mrs Wargowsky in Chinese Checkers. Guests included the Meyns Wargowskys Starkweath ers Schortinghuis De Vries Vanderburg and Miss Harriett Miller. The Jackson sisters left for Columbia Mo to resume work at Stephens College and plan a roller skating party in October or November likely at Sheldon with an upcoming board meeting to approve details.
Newkirk Consolidated school will open Monday September 4. Buses will operate on same routes as last year. Manual Training and Home Economics will be taught again. Prof and Mrs N B Ver Huel and son Bob returned from vacation. Bob broke his arm falling from a pony in Ashton Illinois, arm reset in Waterloo Iowa. cast continues.

Sioux County entrants Rick Nanktgeborn and Gerrit Tesselink from Boyden join W J Wargowsky and H H Jensen of Sioux Center in the 20 pound butter tub contest at Des Moines. The $700 cash prize, medals, and diplomas accompany judging on flavor body color salt and packaging. The fair opens with a large dairy cattle class and a butter sculpture exhibit.
Chris Kalberg will depart Sunday afternoon for Nebraska for a week's vacation. Mr and Mrs Will French visited friends in Boyden on Monday. Henry Walters from near George collided with a Brookings South Dakota car near 6:30 Sunday evening. Walters turned into the Herman Kruse driveway and hit the westbound Brookings car. Both vehicles suffered minor damage and no injuries occurred.
