Beep Tone Alerts Phone Recording in Use

The beep tone added to calls signals that the conversation is being recorded every 15 seconds. Northwestern Bell official R F Macheak says the beep informs the other party of a recording. Regulators approved linking voice recorders to lines if the beep is used. The telephone company supplies the tone equipment but not the recorder.

Government estimates project U S corn yield near 8.828 billion bushels with Iowa at 675 million and six major states totaling 1.949 billion. Iowa Youths Plan Own Crop Drive for CROP Relief

Nine Iowa youth organizations form a plan for high school participation in this year’s Christian Rural Overseas Program. A goal of 20 cars of relief cereal will be collected the week before Thanksgiving through a house to house canvass. The cereal will be bought for Europe’s starving and undernourished as a cheap nutritious one dish meal costing about 1 cent per serving.

Loss Of Export Market Cuts Demand For Flax Straw

E A Olsen of Archer Daniels Midland warns loss of foreign markets will sharply cut Northwest flax straw demand in 1948, with top grades most sought as farmers face reduced income by two to three million dollars. He notes U S industrial users expand domestic markets but dollar shortages curb exports. Olsen projects total flax cash income well above 200 million dollars. Mrs Leo Pohl Dies After Brief Illness at Sheldon

Mrs. Leo Pohl died Tuesday evening at Sheldon Hospital after a short illness. She had undergone surgery for a ruptured appendix Monday July 26 and remained critically ill until death. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 PM at the Lutheran Church in Sheldon. The Pohls have lived in a tenant house on the Peter Moret farm since March 1, 1948.

Boyden's Mighty Midgets Rally To Semi Final

Boyden's small Midget Baseball Team advances to the Cherookee Midget tournament semi final after two wins. They defeated Sanborn 4 3 with Ray Rholfs collecting two hits and edged Onawa 18 10. Pitching was led by Jerry Starkweather and Delmar Slykhuis with Herm Meester coaching. They will face Quimby Thursday night to decide the championship challenger.

Regular town council meeting in the mayor's office with Mayor Rouwenhorst presiding. Minutes of prior meeting approved. Boyden Woman Wins Fish Prize In Iowa Lakes Contest

In Lake region events Mrs. Fred Atatarkweather of Boyden took the women’s and largest large mouth bass prizes with a four pound two ounce catch. Mrs. Bareshee won the small mouth bass prize with a four pound two ounce fish. L P Edman of Wesley claimed the channel prize for a three pound twelve ounce smallmouth bass. Joel Herbst of Olaf Samuelson and Sioux Rapids shared the walleye accolades with a six pound fourteen ounce catch, while Herbst of Algona secured the perch prize with a seven pound twelve ounce fish.

Boyden Softball Team Advances to Hull Tournament Final

The Boyden softball squad moves to the Hull tournament final on Friday night August 6 after wins over Middleberg 5 to 1 and Le Mars Plymouth Co-op 8 to 5. Kleinhesslink pitched the first game and sammit the second as Hull teams progressed defeating Le Mars Eagles and Maurice.

Monahan Post Band to Play at Boyden Softball Tourney

The Monahan Post Band will perform at the Boyden Softball Tournament on Friday August 13 with an hour long concert at 8 00 P M on the local ball grounds. The tournament championship game follows at 9 00 P M Eight teams from nearby towns entered and a 300 prize pool is offered to boost play. The event kicks off Monday August 9.

Sioux Center hosts the 4-H Achievement Show August 18 and 19 with a Farm Sports Festival and a greased pig catching contest. Northwestern College Adds Guerra as Physical Education Head

Northwestern Junior College announces Joseph Guerra of California Pennsylvania as head of the Physical Education Department and college coach. He holds a Masters in Physical Education from the University of Pittsburg and starred as a tri state guard at Grove City College. The campus expands science labs and credits in athletic training while enrollment rises. Guerra’s leadership expected to boost basketball. Also in news, Mr and Mrs Case Houtsma and Dorothy escape injuries when their car overturns near Boyden after a rain soaked road.
