Cal Stickel pleads for one monthly meeting night for Boyden businessmen to coordinate events and plan a better community. He criticizes other organizations for conflicting activities and urges cooperation to avoid scheduling clashes.
Home planners are urged to prepare for possible water and food disruption from attack or disaster. The FCDA booklet outlines safe drinking water storage methods, approved containers, and cooling, plus use of canned foods and nonrefrigerated staples for emergency feeding and sanitation.
Seven Boyden High School students travel to Perry Iowa for the Iowa State High School Music Contest on April 29 and 30. Participants include Arlyne Kruse Janice Smit Darlene De Boer Marjorie Vermeer Coralyn Van Derpen Marian Vagts and Marilynn Kammlade. The group is led by music instructor Mr Wade with chaperones Mrs Ray Smit Mrs E C Kammlade and Mr and Mrs Leslie Wade.
The Boyden School invites parents and children to a May 3 enrollment program at 3:00 p.m. in the school gym. A film We Go To School explains school community norms and expectations for new entrants. Eligible children must be five by November 15, 1954 for fall enrollment.
Robert J. Struyk, son of Anne Struyk of Boyden, is among 141 Hope College seniors to receive an A B degree at the June 14 commencement in Hope Memorial Chapel at 10 00 am. He participates in English Majors Club German Club Phi Tau Nu Men’s Glee Club Chapel Choir and Phi Alpha Theta and plans to teach after graduation.
Sheridan Homemakers will meet May 7 at 1 pm at the home of Mrs Wm. L. Moret. The program features Making Aluminum Trays and a roll call prompting A Book I have Read. Attendees are asked to bring a water-color brush and an appropriate pattern for tray if possible.
The Sqyden Womens Club will meet on May 10 at 8 00 pm in the school gym. A program and lunch will be provided. Families and guests are invited to attend.
John Miller cut his finger on a saw while at work last week. He was taken to a Sanborn doctor’s office where several stitches were made.
Mrs John Rensink Sr entertained Monday evening honoring her husband on his 84th birthday. Guests were his children and their families. A social hour preceded a two course luncheon.
The William Brantsen farm in Center Township will host a windbreak demonstration at 3:30 a.m. on April 29. Conducted with Iowa State College and Sioux County Extension Service, the display shows how properly selected planting and spacing protect and beautify the farmstead. The farm lies three and a third miles west of the Southside Grocery in Sioux Center.
The Sheridan Community Chest Board met April 13 at Wendell Rensink's home to decide disbursement of the war time chest funds. Albert Winter moved to donate the balance to the American Cancer Society and urged organizing a replacement chest or new recipient. A Sept. 20 meeting at Sheridan School No. 4 was announced. board members are Bernard Groeters president, Albert Winter, Paul Sohl, and Wendell Rensink.
Alvin Winter 25 of Boyden received serious burns when his 1953 Plymouth was rear ended near Ritter on highway 33 and careened into a ditch starting a fire. He remains in Sheldon community hospital in critical condition. Albert Imhoff 39 of May City, driver of the striking car, was unhurt. Imhoff’s car sustained $850 damage. Winters' car was a total loss. The crash, between two southbound vehicles on a straight stretch, is under investigation.
Local social notes list numerous Sunday and weekend visits across Hull, Sheldon, Sanborn, and nearby areas. Attendees include Mr and Mrs Case Van Batavia, Sharon Leusink, Bert Engelsman, Danny, Ed Jansma of Currie rejoining George Riemers, and many others from Hull, Leota, Sheldon, Marcus, and Sioux Center in multiple host homes.

Mary Ellen Salmon expresses appreciation to friends neighbors and relatives who visited sent cards and gifts and offered kindness during her stay at Sheldon hospital and her convalescence at home.
