A special stockholders meeting decided to demolish the old west elevator and reconstruct it at an estimated cost of 4000 to 5000 dollars. The move aims to create two first class elevators to expand grain handling amid car shortages. Directors may also arrange John Deere machinery agency for customers, without stock or cash investment. About thirty stockholders attended.
W. S. Tuttle is appointed to gather books for soldiers and schedules Saturday April 20 for donations at the town hall. Residents are urged to bring books at home, magazines are not wanted, and the call emphasizes community participation in collecting reading material for Cantonments.
A patriotic exhortation urges readers to buy War Savings Stamps to support the war effort. The ad promises thrift can curb extravagance and claims stamping out Kaiserism through financial contributions. It emphasizes the letters U S S and the duty of citizens to invest in war savings stamps.
The War Department calls for 150000 more National Army troops. Iowa must supply 3412. Sioux County quota fixed at 87, all from class 1 and ready to entrain for Camp Dodge on April 26. Exemptions available for those actively engaged in farming and crops. Registrants must file affidavits by April 18 to claim deferment. blanks at local banks.
Dr Will Kuyper of Wood land Iowa will locate at Boyden to establish an office and housing. He is a physician and surgeon known in the community and a brother of Mrs Arne Verdoorn. He formerly lived in Sanborn Iowa and plans to move his family here soon.
The undersigned drayman John Van Diepen announces higher charges effective May 1 for coal per ton seventy five cents rubbish per load sixty cents gravel per ton thirty five cents and cement per ton twenty five cents as a response to the rising cost of living and feed hay.
Joe Stientjes of A.C. Lanham county area reports his Percheron stallion is at the barn. Short Horm man near Sheldon sold seven head of cattle last week for seven thousand dollars in a private deal to L. H. Jones of Everly Iowa at one hundred dollars each.
Camp Dodge soldiers band visited Boyden with outside speakers drawing a countywide crowd. The program included patriotic music and a talk by Mr Moss on civic duty. Sioux City speakers Mitchell Bennett and Huber urged Liberty Bond donations as Sioux County nearly doubled its quota. The band then moved on to Primghar, with the square decorated and a band stand ready.
A 1918 report lists Red Cross supplies sent from the Boyden branch to the Orange City chapter. Items include helmets sweaters scarves wristlets socks trench caps washcloths hospital bags and comfort bags with dates in March and quantities for each shipment.
A fragmented notice lists coal per ton with high living costs and feed prices, rubbish per load, and gravel per ton with 35 cents cement referenced. Names a person 246 Wm Jantzen.
