Insane Wright County man aims at bridge arson
H. B. Paine, an elderly Wright County resident, was declared insane and moved to Clorinda asylum after plotting to set fire to a railroad bridge northwest of Eagle Grove. Sheriff officials prevented a possible wreck on the Chicago & Northwestern line as Paine climbed near the Boone River bridge with rifle and weapons, intending to warn trains and seek revenge after a rejected pass request. The near-miss occurred just as a westbound freight and passenger train approached, and Paine was later confined at Clorinda asylum.
