Wright County Farm Bureau news on Shelby oats adoption
Nine Wright County farmers grow about 200 acres of the new Shelby oat variety for 1951 planting. Shelby oat, a selection from the Experiment Station, yields well and matures three to four days earlier than Clinton oats, with higher resistance to crown rust and other rusts. Local growers listed include Leon Helver, Henry Nichols, Nels Lindyell, Laurel Hilt, Raymond Clerk, Dean Mixon, Clarence Hildebrand, Morse Neilsen, and others. Seed supply requests urged, with pricing limited to about 1.03 per bushel over the November 2, 1950 Chicago price for No. 2 oats, and strict field and bin inspections required for certification. Farmers are encouraged to compare Shelby fields before harvest.
