Spring arrives as Renwick High starts baseball with practice drills on Wednesday. Players run to the highway and back for warmups, perform calisthenics and dashes, then take turns at the plate for batting practice. A new sport development and competition program are noted for the year.
The American Legion Auxiliary announces four winners in each class of the Poppy Poster Contest with top honorees Ruby Heggen Nancy Helmich Roxie Ann Whitte Marten Lund Martha Trask Tiennis Nerem Rachel Mandsarer Patsy Haaland Marilyn Nissen Roger Siemens Donald Kraft Aris Rapp Sandra McKenna The winners advance to the next contest and local prizes of 1 50 1 and Ta in each class will be awarded soon. The theme is Child Welfare and Pan American countries. Tonight a Haiti report will be given and a County Auxiliary meeting occurs at Livermere on April 17 at 1 30.
On April 12 many groups meet including Fort A. H. Martin’s club hosts Mrs APRIL 12 and Mrs Oscar Engstrom, Woman’s Club with Mrs Paul Heggen, KYN Club with Mrs M. M. Green, and American Legion Auxiliary at Legion Hall. Other items include April 19 14 Mausi¢ contest at Roge for Renwick and Vernon April 19 21 State Speech contest April 25 Vernon Senior plays and April 27 Renwick Senior play.
Richard Guever son of Mr and Mrs Frite Gugger of Renwick suffered severe facial cuts and possible concussion in a one car crash near the A G Oppedahl farm on highway 66 south of Renwick. He dozed at the wheel and the car flipped after leaving the road. he was taken to Fort Dodge hospital.
Funeral services for Claus Block 71 longtime resident were held this afternoon at St Pauls Lutheran Church Rev A L Braunsweig officiated Block suffered a stroke Sunday and died Tuesday He is survived by his wife and eight children Pallbearers included Fritz Krause A H Krause Walter McPeak Donald Clowes Maurice Nissen and Ralph Anderson Beenens Funeral Service handled arrangements Obituary to run next week in the Times.
The Vernon PTA met Friday evening in the Vernon gymnasium for an April session featuring five solos and eight ensembles slated for contest. Officers elected were Lawrence Marty president, Donald Rater vice president, Henry Hefty secretary, and Art Larson treasurer.
Elaine Blumhagen 25 daughter of Rev and Mrs. C Blumhagen of Renwick was injured in a Saturday auto accident near Vinton. She was hospitalized after being thrown from the car she drove. Bettendorf high school students were passengers. Town officials discuss Boone Valley Electric interconnection to Renwick including a new engine and substation costs estimated at 26 000 to 28 000 with long term power options. A Rowat Murray survey is available at the Renwick town hall.
Fire at the Paul Dobson farm home Saturday evening caused heavy smoke with damage to a room where a plastic toy near a hot stove pipe sparked the blaze. Renwick Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire despite a strong north wind. the house was insured.
A reorganization petition is to circulate in the Renwick Vernon area this weekend seeking the formation of Boone Valley Community School District. The mass meeting in Renwick Auditorium endorsed the plan to unify parts of Renwick Vernon and Grove Townships with a vote on the new district.
Renwick and Vernon students will join the state music contest for small groups and solos at Bode on April 13 and 14. Vernon School enters nine ensembles and seven solos while Renwick lists 16 band entries and five soloists. Participants include Bruce Winans Larry Robb Burnis Wilhelm Bruce McGowan Patti Green Patrick Gilligan Ronald Hefti Chuck Merkle and others in Brass Trumpet Clarinet and Woodwind groups.
Mr and Mrs Braden Richardson of Clear Lake celebrate the birth of a daughter Linda Jane on April 2 weighing seven pounds nine ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs C A Richardson. The Belles of Boone 4-H attended fun night at Clarion on April 6 with Janet Martin Karen Tincher and Sharon Hoffman performing with the County Chorus. Sharon Hoffman was the Queen candidate from the club and Linda Huntley served as usher. The group performed the skit Hurrah For Sadie Hawkins.
