The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 288.36 points to 7,827.43, rebounding from Monday’s declines. Nasdaq surged 75.84 points after a Monday plunge, while NYSE volume hit a record 1.204 billion shares as traders bought cheap stocks.
Kay Shaukis of Beckley filed Aug. 19 with the West Virginia Human Rights Commission alleging sexual harassment by three Raleigh County Sheriff office officials including Sheriff Frank Lavender and Col. Charles Lilly. Officials say details await investigation and no suit has yet been filed.

A Charlotte man, Luther Jenkins IV, was arrested after a traffic stop on U S Route 19 in Summersville for speeding and after officers found marijuana, a .38 Colt handgun, and $1,600 in cash in his vehicle. Jenkins, with three prior drug convictions, was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and possession of a deadly weapon while prohibited. He was jailed at the Central Regional Jail.
Summersville police arrested Toney Fortuna after a 9mm handgun was taken from Favorite Things Pawn Shop on Webster Road. Timothy Brown, an employee, reported the suspect and surveillance footage led to Fortuna’s identification. He was arraigned by Magistrate Robert Gordon and released on personal recognizance bond.
