Sixteen skydivers including Ed Trick of Petaluma California leaped from the New River Gorge Bridge setting a world record during Bridge Day celebrations. The event drew more than 300 BASE jumpers from around the world for a day of festivities.
People from around the world packed Fayette County for Bridge Day at the New River Gorge. With near perfect weather, estimates ranged from 100000 to 170000, vendors reported brisk sales, and first timers like Michael Beckmann from Louisville praised the event. Local families attended with grandchildren as jumpers soared above the canyon and continue a long standing fall tradition.
Sen. Robert C. Byrd urged business and community leaders at the Beckley Raleigh County Black Business Association dinner to boost positive role models for youth. The event at Glade Springs raised 25000 for the BBC BBA scholarship fund and emphasized faith, parental involvement, and education to counter media and internet negativity.
Thousands of rail fans and locals filled Hinton for the first weekend of Railroad Days as temperatures rose into the upper 70s under a mostly sunny sky. Tem ple Street became a pedestrian fleet of stalls and food booths while the 1 p.m. C P Huntington excursion train from Huntington drew hundreds, remaining until about 4 p.m. The fully booked car No 3, once owned by Harold Van derbilt, highlighted the event.
