The Associated Press notes October 12 as Columbus Day in the United States and Thanksgiving Day in Canada. It recalls Columbus’s 1492 arrival in the Bahamas, Edith Cavell's execution in 1915, and 1942 Federal action on Italian nationals in the United States during World War II, with Nixon’s 1973 nomination mentioned.
