Former administrator to get new attorney in fraud case
John Maestas, former administrator at the American West Heritage Center, told U.S. District Judge Charles Haden he cannot afford a private attorney after being indicted on 13 counts of submitting false invoices. He recently lost his job and listed his house for sale. Maestas had been represented by Todd Twyman, who warned the court Maestas lacked funds for a retainer. The case involves alleged false invoices related to the Hazmat program funded by a $9.8 million DOE grant. If convicted, Maestas faces up to 65 years in prison and up to $4.25 million in fines. The federal public defender's office will represent him, with trial set for July.
