Fire smoke clears at tire storage site in Marion County

Fire destroyed thousands of tires stacked in a two story building in rural Marion County. State and federal investigators will test soil and water for pollutants and review storage permits. About 100 nearby homes faced smoke exposure with some evacuations as hazardous material crews contained the blaze.

Fairmont agrees to pay share in IRS settlement over bonds

Fairmont will contribute a proportionate share to an IRS settlement regarding bonds issued in 1988 to refinance sewer debt. Steptoe & Johnson, Butcher & Singer now Wheat First Union, and the city’s tax counsel are among those assisting. Investigators reviewed more than $3 million in bonds to probe possible illicit profits from markups. The sewer board previously voted in May to sign, but the payment amount remains undisclosed.
