Train Car Carrier Crash Sparks Flames in Montgomery
A CSX coal train struck a DJK Trucking car carrier hauling eight 1997 and 1998 GM cars at the Jackson Street Third Avenue crossing in Montgomery. The impact left seven cars burning as first responders battled the blaze after a 4:35 a.m. call. Driver Billy Ray Holland abandoned the stalled truck as the train approached.

Correctional Facilities Official Tacks to Ease Overcrowding
Corrections Commissioner Bill Davis announced 98 additional beds will be added to Fayette County prison to relieve regional jail crowding. The old Colin Anderson Center in St Marys opens as a low to minimum facility today, and Mount Olive will double bunk select pods to house about 450 more inmates by year end. Davis stressed selective double-bunking, non violent offender rehabilitation, and selecting a new Mount Olive warden within six weeks after an exhaustive candidate review.

West Virginia seat belt use declines in 1996 study
A state Bureau of Public Health report shows 18.1 percent of West Virginia adults seldom or never used seat belts in 1996, up from 14.7 percent in 1995, with women earning 50,000 plus and male college graduates among highest users. The Behavioral Risk Factor Study also finds 37 percent of adults consider themselves obese, higher than 1984 levels.
