From tragedy to triumph Stump Excavating celebrates 25th year
E W Stump Excavating Contractor marks 25 years in business this year after a near fatal 1968 accident on Interstate 79 in Valley Forge. He returned after weeks in hospital to Beckley and built a septic tank, basement, demolition and blasting, swimming pool, and storage tank removal business. Jennifer Cannaday Stump recalls his coma and recovery, and the couple credits customer satisfaction and word of mouth for steady growth. He maintains a webpage at www.shopbeckley.com/ewstump.

The June Producer Price Index shows wholesale drug costs up 3.2 percent led by tranquilizers, with generic drugs rebounding after years of moderation. Energy and food costs largely cooled, keeping overall inflation low. Analysts differ on whether the decline will persist, while calls for antitrust probes rise as drug price dynamics attract scrutiny.

Judge eyes tax break for idled farmland under conservation
A U.S. Tax Court judge ruled that payments to landowners in the Conservation Reserve Program may be treated as rental income, not self employment taxes. If upheld on appeal, active farmers would avoid the 15.3 percent self employment levy while regular income tax applies. The decision concerns the government’s largest farmland conservation effort and its tax treatment.
