Job Losses Hit Southern West Virginia in July
Southern West Virginia saw 1190 fewer jobs in July year over year as regional unemployment rose to 7.4 percent. Across 10 Beckley surrounding counties, goods producing jobs fell 3.6 percent while service producing jobs dropped 0.6 percent, with Raleigh and Wyoming counties bearing large declines. Statewide, service jobs rose 1.4 percent and goods jobs 0.8 percent.

Teacher pleads no contest to battery in school incident
Oak Hill High School teacher George Scott Vargo of Mount Hope pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge tied to a March hallway incident with student William Jackson, 17. Jackson alleged Vargo grabbed his arm and dragged him to a restroom, then warned him not to write to his daughter. Vargo was fined 50 dollars plus costs 117 total and must stay away from Jackson. prosecutors noted the student and family did not want jail time.
