The Smithsonian Institution will cut back some losing publications recordings and videos. The Smithsonian Collection of Recordings will be eliminated after two Grammys and 20 years of jazz and pop releases while Folkways may absorb jazz and pop material. Rep Gerald Solomon apologized for a racist term used in criticizing UN Secretary General Kofi Annan but defended his stance. He claimed no racist intent though the comment drew backlash from Rep Donald Payne and others.
