Schools reject Pepper Park offer and propose deed
School Trustees rejected the city’s offer to sell Pepper Park at Church and Central for 50 000 dollars arguing the 1 3 acre plot isn’t worth that much. They offered to have the city deed the land to the schools with a revert clause if park maintenance stops. The superintendent said the price assumed 27 apartment units but the narrow 54 000 square foot strip wouldn’t justify 50 000 and would be unused for school building purposes. He warned against losing park land to development and suggested the schools could maintain the park at little cost with existing equipment. The city has pursued sale for more than five years. Pepper Park sits beside Redlands Junior High and is grassed with pepper trees. The Park Commission also asked if McKinley school custodians could care for new street trees on Center south of Olive.

Water bill bill defeat in Legislature halts San Bernardino plan
Assemblyman L Stewart Hinckley led a bid to amend the California Water Code to admit Santa Ana river discharges from San Bernardino’s sewage plant and downstream extraction. The measure failed by 27 to 26 with 26 nonvoting and one absent, despite expunging a previous vote to allow a second tally. The plan would have routed treated effluent to the river bed and drawn an equal amount downstream, a move Riverside and Orange counties blocked in court.
