Henry Kissinger extends his stay at the Shanghai summit as talks continue with Chinese officials. Officials say the pace of discussions remains steady with no announced timetable for a final communique.
UPI reports President adviser Henry Kissinger postponed plans for a sightseeing trip to Leningrad to continue talks with Soviet leader Brezhnev. Kissinger, in a Volga area lodge with Brezhnev, aims to discuss bilateral ties and a Washington summit, with no definite date set for the visit.
Transportation Secretary Claude S Brinegar downgraded the threat of a nationwide gasoline shortage for this summer calling it worrisome but not serious He warned of limited local shortages and ruled out gas rationing while predicting continued shortages until new refineries raise production in 24 to 30 months and said prices should not rise.
Dr. Clarence Bateson of Red Bluff, president of the Mt. Shasta Chiropractic Association, announced Tehama County has officially proclaimed May as Correct Posture Month. A misspelling in Friday's Daily News mistook him as Dr. Charles Bateson.

Indians begun to comply with a Sunday agreement to end the 70 day occupation of Wounded Knee in Pine Ridge South Dakota. The Community Relations Service has listed occupiers and weapons ahead of expected arms surrender by AIM members by Wednesday. Federal sources say the first provision is accomplished despite a late deadline and ongoing perimeter concerns.
Three people were slightly injured when a southbound car rolled over a bank on Long Road four miles north of Wildcat Road. Driver Ernest Dyke and passengers Linda Hoffman and Eddie Weston, all in their 20s, were treated and released. Other incidents included a solo crash on Gyle Road injuring no one, a center divider rollover on Interstate 5 injuring none, and a truck rollover on State Route 36 West with the driver unhurt.
Attorney General designate Elliot L. Richardson announced he will appoint a special prosecutor to supervise an impartial Watergate investigation. He said the appointee will have full independence and he plans to act quickly, but did not disclose the candidate.
Donald H. Haslett 53 a Gerber resident and drilling foreman for the state highway department died from a self inflicted .22 rifle shot in his Smith Avenue home. His death followed despondency over paralysis from a two year old auto accident. Survivors include his wife two daughters and four grandchildren. Funeral plans are pending with Hall Brothers Mortuary and contributions may go to the Paraplegic Fund.
Shasta College Summer Festival of Arts seeks actors for Bus Stop by William Inge. Open roles include a high school girl, a mature woman, several mature men, and a young cowboy. Tryouts Tuesday May 8 at 8 p.m. in room 522, College Theater Building.

President Nixon met in Key Biscayne with Gen Alexander Haig his new White House chief to discuss restructuring the scandal shaken staff. Haig arrived Sunday night to prepare for sessions as Nixon winds down four days of seclusion in Florida and the Bahamas. The president picked Haig Friday to replace Haldeman as chief of staff amid Watergate concerns. Officials avoided questions on bugging and cover up while acknowledging the political fallout.
Roger Lowell Parker 63 a former Tehama County Chief Probation Officer died Saturday morning while camping at Camp Bristow Hood Scout Camp east of Chico. He served 17 years at Curtiss E Wetter Juvenile Hall and held many civic roles including Red Bluff Presbyterian Church Red Bluff Elks Lodge Mt Lassen Council Boy Scouts Area volunteer award expected for 30 years service. He is survived by wife Gena two sons Dan and Roger Jr two daughters Marilyn Martindale and Marjorie Murray his mother Ethel Parker a brother Gerald Parker seven. Funeral services are Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Fickert Pascoe Mortuary with interment Oak Hill Cemetery. Contributions to Mt Lassen Area Council BSA.
