Freezing rain heavy snow and blizzard conditions paralyzed parts of the central United States. Winds up to 45 miles per hour were expected to persist over much of Kansas Colorado and New Mexico today as the winter storm continued.
Fog and low clouds persist tonight and morning, clearing tomorrow afternoon with a cooler spell. Winds will be light to moderate from the west to northeast, highs expected in the 50s today and tomorrow, cooler tonight in the upper 30s to low 40s. Friday may bring a chance of rain. Temperatures yesterday peaked at 63 with a 40 degree low this morning. river levels show Lake Red Bluff at 15.5 feet and other bridges between 25.0 and 207.1 feet above sea level. Sunset tonight is 4:46 p.m., sunrise tomorrow 7:27 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Kuwait's cabinet met for three hours to decide the fate of five guerrillas who hijacked a Lufthansa jet and sparked a hostage siege ending with 33 dead. A spokesman said no decision on trial has been made, with possible extradition to the PLO if requested.
Conferees approve unlimited presidential authority to impose gasoline rationing and other energy measures through June 30 with congressional vetoes. The plan lets Nixon act as last resort on rationing and retains stepped control for other conservation programs until final, post June 30 authorization.
President Nixon says he cannot recall paying California income taxes during his time as a congressman senator and vice president. White House aides say they do not plan to search California tax records from 1948 to 1960 for clarification. Also Scotland Yard releases composite sketches of two IRA suspects linked to recent London bombings. A Liberian freighter with about 40 crew members sank in the North Pacific about 500 miles west of Vancouver with unknown fate of the crew.
Former Vice President Spiro Agnew pleaded before a three judge Maryland court to allow him to continue practicing law despite suspension. He said he could resume a useful role in law after suspension and wished to return to credit the courts and his practice. He noted his resignation in 1973 after tax evasion fines and spoke from a muted, formal stance at Anne Arundel County courthouse.
The Red Bluff City Council preliminary approved connecting Tehama County Fairground to city water. Fair Manager Bard Saunders and Fair Board President Robert Kerstiens requested access, citing inadequate current wells and pumps. Costs will be covered by the Fair Board from state fair funds. The council waived acreage and double city water rates, though Mayor James Hoffman dissented, noting the fairground should pay the nonresident rate to cover local bonds. The decision may affect future Antelope Valley water requests after the Jan 15 annexation election.
Tehama County Road Department will fix the Brush Creek bridge on Reeds Creek Road with a slower speed advisory sign, expanded turnout for the Reeds Creek School bus, and improved maintenance. CHP to increase patrols and review bus stops. Officials acknowledge crashes may continue.
Tehama County United Crusade volunteers moved to cleanup with the Corning area as the drive pushes toward a 1974 goal of 33 000. Chairman George Donnelly reports 31 900 pledged via 11 member agencies, with a final year-end figure hoped for and letters planned to last-year givers.
