In a 16 page brief Nixon contends courts cannot compel surrender of Watergate tapes, arguing the presidency is unique and executive privilege protects presidential privacy while allowing the executive to decide whether to disclose or withhold information.
Federal officials in Baltimore say Vice President Spiro T. Agnew has provided all requested personal financial records. U.S. Attorney George Beall noted the records may be kept offsite while investigators review them and said the grand jury may soon increase its activity. Attorney General Elliot Richardson said he briefed Agnew on the probe into possible extortion bribery and conspiracy.
The Agriculture Department announced that federal food stamps may be used to buy imported food starting next Tuesday. The 1960s restriction on foreign goods was repealed by Congress in the new farm bill now becoming law, due to short domestic supplies.
Herbert W. Kalmbach, Nixon's former personal lawyer, accuses John Ehrlichman of lying and offers a lie detector test as a deposition in a $6.4 million suit over Watergate details. Kalmbach recounts $220,000 disbursed to conspirators after arrests and seeks assurances from Ehrlichman.
Vast forests in northern Idaho and western Montana burned across 13 fires totaling over 22 300 acres. Two major Idaho fires scorched 5 000 and 4 000 acres. Montana blaze between Great Falls and Helena burned 5 000 acres. Firefighting costs hit 500 000 dollars daily. Governor Andrus activated the National Guard. Two unchecked fires along the Idaho Montana border in Bitterroot National Forest fanned the crisis.
The five year plan aims to raise public awareness about fighting cancer and remove environmental cancer risks. It calls for identifying risks from polluted waterways and household devices and reducing smoking related lung cancer.

Tehama County supervisors set aside 60 000 toward a new Corning library, with county share capped at half the building cost. They also earmarked 55 000 for a Bowman area fire station and equipment, a one time expense, while cutting 18 500 for Baker Station winter maintenance.
General Omar N. Bradley, aged 80, shows improvement but remains in serious condition with blood clots in his lungs. The last surviving five star officer was hospitalized after emergency surgery following unsuccessful drug treatment for the clots.
Registration for all new Red Bluff High School students starts at the Counseling Center on Tuesday and runs until the first day of school on September 5. Appointments with counselors can be made by calling Mrs. Betty Ramsey at 527-7230 between 8 30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Enrollment exceeds 1700, so students should book early to secure preferred classes as many limited facilities are already full per Superintendent Pat Murphy.
