Washington officials announced Phase IV of the economic program began at midnight with expected price increases across most goods except beef and petroleum. Beef and petroleum will stay under controls longer, while large firms must give 30 days notice before raising prices.
Prices rise under Phase IV with meats and fuels still frozen for a week while beef price controls last until September. Large firms must file 30 days notice to Cost of Living Council before increases. The delay means full effects occur next month for many items.
Ground air search for a seven year old boy in the Central New Mexico mountains was called off after officials could not verify the distress calls. State Police Chief Martin Vigil noted four listening stations remained ready in case of new signals. Civil Air Patrol coordinator Lawrence Marshall warned the situation could be a hoax or real distress.

A three pound liquid explosive bomb placed beneath a patrol car at the Tehama County jail failed to explode. Deputies watched the device from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m. when an Army ordnance team dismantled it. Investigators seek motive and who placed the bomb.
UPI reports ground controllers determined a software computer mixup caused problems with Skylab's orbital stabilization system rather than a fault in the gyros themselves. Astronauts Bean Garriott and Lousma continued basic research including testing the Astronaut Maneuvering Unit while maintaining the ship's stability with limited gyros.
An Aviaco Caravelle exploded in flight during approach to La Coruna and crashed into Montrove village. All 85 aboard are believed dead with reports of up to five villagers killed. Rescue efforts continued amid clouds and rain.
Israel called the interception of a Lebanese jetliner self defense while noting U S disapproval may block a United Nations Security Council condemnation. A government spokesman said contacts with the United States occurred as the plane was forced to land in a military field.
President Nixon, after five days refining his Watergate address with aides at Camp David, returns to the White House to sign a $20 billion highway bill including urban mass transit funds. A televised address may follow with possible invitees. In Chico, an animal quarantine covers about 12 blocks downtown over a suspected rabies case.
