In Chicago on September 13, Etta Duryea Johnson wife of Jack Johnson testified at an inquest over her death by suicide. She had been caring for the champion heavyweight and suffered nervous prostration and suicidal mania for a year from injuries and exertion in the fight with Jeffries. Johnson spoke in tears as he recalled his wife’s efforts to stop him from suicide, saying those efforts broke down her own health.
