A flood on the Wabash River in Peru Indiana drowned about sixty people. Arthur Moore, a city telephone operator, saw hundreds on rooftops as freezing cold set in and some drowned after slipping into floodwaters. At dawn water surged through main streets driving refugees to higher caves. Rescue efforts faced swift currents and limited boats. motor boats were hauled fifty miles for aid. Crest of Flood Passes as Waters Fall in Dayton

March 26 Dayton Ohio reports the flood crest passed around midnight and waters are receding. About 509 dead estimated, though exact toll uncertain while rescuers with boats search flooded districts. The inundated area spans fifteen square miles with six to fifteen feet of water, largely in the north and west riverfront business area where a sudden wall of water broke the levee before clerks began work. Around 70,000 people remained marooned or unable to reach homes last night.
