In Austin on July 29 the House heard two new blue sky bills from Ratliff and Ridgell. The Senate rejected Wiley's amendment to the direct election bill by a 14 to 10 vote, prohibiting candidate spending of 810,000 instead of 85,000 for campaigns.
Diplomas were presented to seventy three North Texas State Normal graduates from the summer session on Monday night. President Bruce delivered the diplomas to the graduates, as listed in the issue. Mrs. H. VanCleave of Decatur was injured when the auto she and her husband rode in stalled at Hickory Creek southwest of the city. As the car slipped on the incline the engine started and frightened her into leaping from the vehicle. She was brought in for surgical care.
Jessie 15 and Gordon 12 daughters of Horace Thomas of Wichita drowned in the Archer River two miles from town yesterday afternoon. The tragedy occurred as they attempted to swim in the river after an afternoon of heat. Firemen and local rescuers recovered the bodies but efforts to revive them were unsuccessful.

In Guaymas harbor yesterday a Mexican gunboat Tampico was destroyed by a bomb dropped from an airplane operated by Aviator Masson. The incident occurred near Nogales, Arizona, as described in early reports.
E. P. Mattox and G. P. Bain of Fred W. Wolfe Co. of Chicago conducted a preliminary survey of the Alliance Milley Co. plant to raise capacity from 50 to 100 tons. The bottling plant, already doubled and trebled in a year, will be expanded again with more spacious quarters. Upon completion, Denton would boast the largest ice factory and bottling plant of its size in Texas.

Contract let Monday to drill the Highland Park well 500 feet deeper beyond the 2000 foot depth reached. Oil indications have appeared in recent days, and directors voted to extend the search, with the well currently just over 2000 feet deep.
