In Indianapolis on December 20 Henry I Nowlin defending in dynamite cases called McManigal an arch fiend and challenged his confession as lacking corroboration. He argued the defense cannot depriv forty men of liberty based on the word of a contested criminal.

President Taft pardoned John H. Hall former United States District Attorney of Portland Oregon convicted in 1909 of conspiracy in connection with unlawful fencing of public lands. Hall had been fined 1000 dollars and jailed sixty days but fully absolved. The pardon declares Hall innocent and not to have been prosecuted.
