Reports say gas shows at the Carlton lease well on Pecan creek east of the city. Chester F. Evans of the operating company cautioned it appears only seepage so far and not in paying quantities. The 400 foot deep well shows irregular flow that resumes after drilling pauses, with flame from a match and noticeable odor when tested.
Four people died within ten minutes after a Thursday afternoon lightning storm near Ozark Arkansas. Russell Snow and Bert Moore’s sister-in-law died in a hayfield in Watalula Township. Frank Kesingler perished at Mountain Top while driving a wagon. Sid Harmon died on his farm near Ozark and his cousin Charles Harmon was fatally hurt. The storm was not unusually violent or long.
Lieutenant Schmidt of the army aviation corps fell over a mile to his death when his aeroplane collapsed during flight in Halberstadt Prussia on August 22. The AP dispatch reports the fatal accident.
At the Mysore Gold Mines in Bangalore a cage carrying miners plunged to the bottom of a shaft. Fifty miners died instantly and ten more perished in the disaster. Rescue teams searched the shaft as officials assessed the cause and toll.
A deadly dynamite charge consisting of three full 10 inch sticks and two half sticks was found near Mayor Gaynor's office. The mayor was in his office when discovered by a citizen and refused to discuss it. Three years earlier he nearly died from an assassination attempt.
