The Treasury Department began depositing the fifty million dollar government fund in national banks. Initial placements went to Baltimore Richmond Atlanta and Memphis with Atlanta and Memphis each receiving seven hundred fifty thousand dollars.
A gas strike was reported at the Carlton lease well east of town on the McKinney road drawing several citizens to the site Thursday afternoon.
A catalog of registrations shows owners and counties including Fred Hill of Little Elm with a Ford, Miss Maud of McClusky Frisco with a Ford, W F LeGear of Sanger with an Oakland, Otto Sehlemver of Aubrey with a Pope Hartford, J J Huffhines of Justin with a Ford, Wilil Killian of Frisco with a Ford, F W Frietsch with a Ford, L A Neal Sr of Frisco with a Ford, A J Ogle of Justin with a Ford, J McKnight of Dent with a Ford, W Dp Burkholder of Sanger with a Marathon, and S Patterson of Denton with a Studebaker.
Associated Press dispatch reports Frank J. Battle a leading Gatesville merchant was shot and killed in his store last night. Police have no clue about the shooter or motive.
A Will Smith house being moved by a traction engine near Sanger caught fire and burned. The structure was destroyed but the contents were saved.
Hillsboro August 21 J Ward Sanderson a prominent farmer was shot and killed on a public road near Hillsboro this morning. His father-in-law S M Fisher is held on the alleged crime.
Dallas police after three days and nights of work fail to find any valuable clues in the Brown murder mystery. Chief Ryan says the force remains at the same point as on the day of the killing.

Governor Col quitt today in Austin approved and filed a 9:30 civil closing bill, an Allison liquor shipment bill, the blue sky bill, and a bill providing for public warehouses.
Austin Aug 214 Dr A C Oliver Senator from the first district was appointed superintendent of the Confederate home today by Governor Col quitt.
Gov Colquitt will appoint Penitentiary Commissioners as part of his remaining duties from the Legislature. The governor questions the constitutionality of the new prison law and may veto it. He plans to announce veto results by Saturday and considers vetoing large portions of appropriation bills. Talks of a January or February extra session continue.
Pennsylvania senator requests a 25 million appropriation to be spent at the president's direction and urges U S troops be stationed in Mexico to protect Americans abroad.
In Washington on August 21 Senator Penrose introduced a resolution directing the President to deploy US troops in Mexico to protect lives and property, with a Senate authorized appropriation of 25 million for American protection. He seeks quick action on the deficiency bill amendment as well. The move follows partisan efforts to show support for President Wilson against Huerta and amid reports of deadlock and recognition demands.
The Mexican capital reports that Washington demands including a ceasefire, Huerta’s resignation for an interim president, early elections, and Huerta not running were rejected in full by Gen. Huerta. He also pressed for recognition as a condition, complicating negotiations between the two governments.
Kentucky congressman Johnson reports daily death threats tied to his support for a federal loan shark reform bill. He says opponents of the measure have intensified harassment as the effort moves forward.
Rep Johnson of Kentucky told the lobby investigation committee that his push for a federal loan shark law was met with daily threats to his life. He introduced an affidavit from a former Capitol policeman alleging a second ex officer trailed him for three nights to kill him.
Colquitt states he will veto all Denton Colleges building items for Normal and CCLA appropriations. He intends to blue pencil every requested construction item and notify local representative Alvin M. Owsley of the action.
Counsel for Thaw secures delay in habeas corpus writ. Trial set for 10 o clock today postponed without definite date. Defense seeks to strengthen Thaw's case further if possible.
Harry K. Thaw remains in jail as counsel say they will not present him in Superior court today for the habeas corpus writ. The writ is returnable at any time, with delay allowed to strengthen the Thaw case. Thaw is considered safe from deportation while in jail.
Albany Aug 21 Canadian immigration authorities telephoned acting Governor Glynn from Ottawa stating they would use every effort to have Thaw returned to New York state.
In Hamburg Wilhelmsburg two auto bandits killed the bank cashier of the Communal Savings Bank and escaped with a satchel full of banknotes the amount not yet known.
The City Health Officer reported two mild scarlet fever cases in Denton, one in H. G. Taylor’s family on South Denton corporation line and another in Mr. Parsons’ family near the line. Both are improving as authorities push swift containment and urge prompt physician calls.
President Wilson named Francis Burton Harrison of New York to be Governor General of the Philippines. He will assume duties to pave the way for Philippine independence promised by the Democrats.

Bandits fired on King Charles and Queen Elizabeth Carmen Sylvia as they rode by auto near a Roumanian pleasure resort in the Carpathian Mountains. Both royals escaped injury.
Provisional President Huerta in a reply to John Lind’s note argues Wilson is not backed by Congress or the American people. He asserts he is entitled to recognition and casts U S recognition as a partisan issue. Huerta cites private Washington advices as basis for his view.
A naval gun exploded during a test in Pola Austria today killing three officers and fatally wounding six men while seriously injuring a number of others.
Local Representative Alvin M. Owsley reports Governor Colquitt intends to veto all building items in the appropriations for the North Texas State Normal and the College of Industrial Arts. He says the legislature was generous, granting new buildings and a central heating plant to the Normal and dormitory and wings plus a laundry at the CIA, but the governor may cut or alter these items, including the dormitory at CIA and the Manual Arts building or heating plant at the Normal.
