A May summit brought together the Big Four leaders to discuss shared challenges and coordinate approaches on pressing global issues. The talks focused on economic cooperation, security concerns, and collaborative policy initiatives between the participating nations.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev landed in New York under rain and jeers from anti-Communist demonstrators. He signaled openness to serious negotiations at the United Nations on East West disarmament, while Eisenhower insisted on the release of two imprisoned RB47 fliers before any meeting. Khrushchev read a lengthy statement aboard the Baltika and joined remarks from Romanian, Bulgarian, and Hungarian leaders as the General Assembly opened.

Lumumba appeared in hiding, urged parliament, and claimed to still be premier while seeking UN air transport to New York for the Congolese delegation.
Tropical storm Florence moves westward in the Atlantic not yet reaching Donna’s strength. Center near 540 miles southeast of Miami and close to Great Inagua Island with winds 50 to 55 mph in squalls and 30 to 45 mph in the outer semicircle. Forecast a north turn toward Cuba as Donna battered Florida and the Atlantic coast.

Charleston AP Senator Hartke blasted the Eisenhower administration for depicting unemployment as normal and warned of rising joblessness. He spoke at a nine state conference called by Senator Kennedy, criticizing recent labor secretary remarks as deceptive. Governor Combs and Senator Randolph urged national redevelopment and sustained employment growth while Kennedy planned to speak that evening.
In Atlantic City Kennedy proposes arming the next president with tools to handle national emergency labor disputes, citing the 1959-60 steel strike. He opposes cutting the steel industry work week to 32 hours despite unemployment, criticizing the Eisenhower era. He expects Steelworkers Union endorsement after his campaign speech prepared for their convention.
West Virginia University asks state funds totaling 12 266 770 for 1961 62. The request covers salaries and new positions with average increases of 10 percent for academic and administrative staff and 5 to 7 percent for non academic and maintenance staff. It includes 230 730 for new programs including 175 000 for a supplementary retirement plan. The budget excludes new building needs and non appropriated revenue items. The proposal will be refined by the Board of Public Works and presented to the 1961 Legislature.
Sixteen African and Asian nations urged the General Assembly to back Dag Hammarskjold's Congo mission as the 82 nation body met in emergency session. The Asian African resolution sought vigorous action to help the Congolese government keep law and order and called on nations to refrain from sending war materials.
Nehru arrives in Karachi to sign the Indus water treaty with Pakistan backed by a World Bank funded package. He will stay five days to discuss Kashmir and other tensions with President Ayub Khan as crowds cheer their open car ride.
Negro entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. 34 and Swedish actress May Britt 26 set October 16 as their wedding date. Davis told the AP the ceremony may be at his Los Angeles home with Miss Britt’s parents, his family, including his father and stepmother, grandmother and two sisters present. He noted they do not want to avoid the press.
A World Airways transport plane crashed on Mt Barrigada Guam after takeoff from a refueling stop. At least 77 people, mostly American military personnel and families, died. Seventeen survivors were rescued, with two in critical condition. The DC6B carried 86 passengers plus crew of eight. World Airways later cited seven crew members killed. Navigator Edgar W Schweyer survived.
ITHACA N Y AP One of three Cornell University students who hopped a freight train was fatally injured today Barnett O Wirin 21 of Arlington Va planned to register for his senior year at Cornell His companions William Collins of Livingston N J and Harry Ferguson of Baltimore Md said they boarded the Lehigh Valley Railroad train at Freeville five miles from here Wirin was thrown to the roadbed when the train lurched near the campus and died while being taken to Tompkins Memorial Hospital
In New York crowds booed and brawled as anti American demonstrators protested at the United Nations arrival of Foreign leaders including Fidel Castro Wladyslaw Gomulka and Antonin Novotny ahead of Khrushchev. Police dispersed rioters while Castro drew cheers from Cuban supporters at Idlewild airport and later at his East Side hotel.
The Gulf Woman's Club has volunteered its services to the Raleigh County Civil Defense program. A spokesman said many phases of the program require women, who are better qualified to work than men.
Fidel Castro arrives in New York to a mixed reception with thousands greeting him at Idlewild Airport. Police block the gates as Castro waves from a motorcade and says he will speak to the United Nations after addressing the UN. Raul Roa Jr. confirms no news conference before the UN address.
About 2000 members of the Wong family gathered in San Francisco for a reunion in the $100000 Wong family headquarters in Chinatown. Telegrams from Gov Brown and Sen Kennedy were not read by Zepp Whong who noted no Nixon telegram.
