Sixteen Mine Fatalities Reported In August

State Tops Own Coal Output Record Amid Regional Leads

State production for mid August hit 3,160,000 tons, beating last year's 3,130,000. West Virginia led with 3,160,000 tons for the week, with Pennsylvania at 1,739,000 and Southern West Virginia generating 2,227,000. National output rose to 9,950,000 tons, up from 9,829,000 the prior year.

Hinkle Shoots Himself With Empty Gun

Clarence Ray Hinkle, 20, of Oak Hill is in fair condition at Oak Hill Hospital after an apparently accidental self-inflicted gunshot Friday night. His mother, Carrie Hinkle, said he had been drinking and playing with what he thought was an empty pistol when a trigger was pulled, the bullet entering his right temple. He was hospitalized about 7 p.m. Saturday.
