44 Die in Jet Crash near Mt Kit Carson
In Spokane Washington the search for 44 crew members from a KC135 Stratotanker crash resumed at dawn on Mt Kit Carson. 31 bodies were reported found earlier. Air Force offered no survival indication. Among the victims were Captains Frank A. Johnson and Stephen F. Karlowitch and other airmen from Pennsylvania West Virginia Ohio and Harbor Creek. The jet from Ellsworth AFB disappeared while approaching Fairchild AFB and struck the foggy mountain, with debris scattered over a 500 by 200 yard area and fire contained by rain dampness.

Washington reports the United States will resume its final atmospheric nuclear tests in the Pacific near Johnston Island late this month or early October. The AEC and Pentagon say tests will include high altitude and air-dropped devices, with a restricted area around Johnston Island restated Sept 22 and resumption possibly by late September or early October. Soblen Dies After Barbiturate Overdose in Britain
Dr Robert A Soblen, 61, a fugitive Soviet spy and New York psychiatrist, died at Hillingdon Hospital five days after taking a massive barbiturate overdose to avoid deportation to the United States.
