Doctor says contraceptive pills move from experimental to proven safe
Dr Wayne Brandstadt reports that oral contraceptives are past the experimental stage and generally safe when used properly. Side effects like irregular vaginal spotting affect about 20 percent but do not warrant stopping the pill. Pills use hormones from animal ovaries or synthetic compounds and alter ovarian and uterine functions to prevent pregnancy. They are effective between the 5th and 24th day of the cycle and can resume normal fertility after discontinuation. Cautions apply to liver, thyroid, pituitary disease, thromophlebitis, breast or uterine cancer, heart disease, migraine, asthma or epilepsy. Women may gain weight mainly from water retention. The diet Q&A covers a bland diet for diverticulitis and a Pap test explanation clarifies its purpose.
