Moscow China clash labeled as expansionist threat
Pravda accused China of waging a kind of war to reclaim territory along the shared border, claiming Mao Zedong and leaders view Moscow as an opponent in a broader struggle. In Washington, President Johnson ordered an FBI probe into a $25,000 campaign kickback allegation tied to Baker and McCloskey, with further charges about funding from 1960. The Senate controversy spurred calls for investigation from Williams and Dirksen, while Mansfield and the Policy Committee weighed actions. In Miami Beach, UMW’s quadrennial meeting opened amid fistfights and helmeted clashes as Boyle faces reelection amid leadership disputes and wage contract pride.
