Work Emphasized by Sylvester Minister Sermon At Church

The Rev. Ralph W. Hedrick preached on the duty to “work while it is day” at Sylvester Methodist Church. The service, linked to a revival and pastored by Rev. Hedrick, highlighted dedication, sacrifice, and service, with the congregation growing to about 88 members and 200 Sunday School attendees as plans for a new steeple and chimes progress. The church, organized Jan 27, 1946, began in a small block building and started a new tower project under Pastor Hedrick.

Fayetteville Mayor Heads to France for Lafayette Centenary

Dr. M. G. Hresan Fayetteville mayor leaves for France as guest of the French government to attend the 200th birthday celebration of Lafayette in Vichy. He will join fellow Fayetteville mayors in Washington for a reception at the French Embassy before touring LaFayette sites including Vichy Clermont-Ferrand and Paris with official receptions.

Student invited to campus leaders conference at Stephens College

Oceana Miss Marian Upchurch daughter of Dr and Mrs C T Upchurch has been invited to attend a Campus Leaders Conference September 7 to 9 at Stephens College in Columbia Missouri. Camp officers will train for responsibilities in the coming school year and all students are due at the campus by September 10.

Auto Wreck Injures Man At Page Road

Jerry Cameron was admitted to Oak Hill Hospital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday for injuries from a Page Road accident. The car was a total loss. He was treated and released. Barbara Jean Graham, 10, of Wyoming, received treatment at Stevens Clinic for a severe sprain of the right foot after a fall from a stone wall.

Sunday Visit Highlights Cross Town Family Gatherings

Sunday visitors at the home of Mrs. Franny Angle in Weirwood included Sherman Angle Jr. and family from Tams, and Effie Lilly of Cittsville visiting H. P. Cushbaugh in Beckley. Also present were Warless Stover of Cirtsville, J. E. Bergandahl from Huntington, and numerous Stover relatives from Maxwell Hill and Bradley. Hyslop Funeral Slated Thursday

Smithers memorial service for Alex Potts Hyslop will be held Thursday at 2 pm in Smithers Presbyterian Church. Burial in Hill Top Cemetery near Oak Hill. Hyslop, 81, died Tuesday in Charleston Hospital after two weeks illness. Born in Scotland in 1876, he once lived in Eccles Raleigh County and was a former Robson postmaster. Survivors include six daughters and two sons, plus grandchildren and great grandchildren. The body will be moved to Gauley Bridge Funeral Honor before services.

Hypoxia Cited in Death of Mount Hope Girl

Fayette County Prosecutor J Zane Lum Minerfield announced autopsy results show Carrie Fay Redden died of hypoxia at Grassy Meadows Greenbrier County. No violent or accidental cause found. Six men with the girl on the night charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and bond set at 300 dollars each.

Presbyterians Honor Miss Smith At Oak Hill Church

Miss Mary Smith of Charleston was honored at a reception at Oak Hill Presbyterian Church for her work as Christian education director and junior day camp chief. She lived at 712 Grace Ave and attends Morris Harvey College, planning missionary work, with recent leadership training in North Carolina and a new church library with 178 books.

Oceana business partners Chilton Tucker and Carl W Hammond of the Clear Fork Wardware and Supply Co. dissolved their partnership by mutual agreement. Hammond continues in hardware at the current location. Elizabeth Estelle Harman daughter of Mr and Mrs William French Harman of Tazewell Virginia married Rudolph Alonzo Zemonek at St Elizabeth Catholic Church Par hontas Virginia. Jones Injures Hand at Kopperston Mine

Judge Taylor to rule on beer license dispute

Circuit Judge Frank L. Taylor will decide next week on a beer license dispute involving Allen Howerton of Bud and Beer Commissioner R. D. Platt. The case centers on a bribe allegation after a prior hearing where Howerton allegedly waved a one hundred dollar bill and was removed from Platt’s office. Howerton and his wife operate a Bud grocery and tavern. The court asked for briefs to decide whether the commissioner acted with or without a hearing in denying renewal and a new license.
