Beckley Named to Lead Bar Meeting and Exemption Debate
Beckley was chosen to head the state bar meeting in October 1953 as Carl C. Sanders of Beckley named chairman of the committee for the annual session. A proposal to end WVU Law graduates’ special bar exam exemption was approved by the Bar board after a two hour Charleston hearing. The plan would require all graduates to pass a bar exam, with limited exemption for students enrolled at WVU College of Law when the rule drops, and set exam timing before July 9 for early qualification. The board also urged that no applicant be allowed to sit for the bar without a degree from a recognized law school, aligning with broader ABA recommendations to end the exemption.
