Operation Long Shot set to end fear of nuclear war
Amchitka Island hosts 200 U S scientists workers preparing for a Defense Department test called Operation Long Shot. A single 980 kiloton underground detonation aims to provide data to locate seismic events and distinguish explosions from earthquakes, possibly advancing a global ban on nuclear weapons. Forty years after WWII, the remote Aleutian island hosts quonset huts, roads, cables, and a cautious safety plan including sea otter relocation before the blast.
