A day long Rhodell tavern brawl left several residents injured and police seek the motive and shooter. Clarence Tanks, 21, reportedly in good condition after a gunshot wound to the side, is the son of Sam Tanks, about 40, of Rhodell, who was not involved. James Alexander, about 30, was treated for a stab wound in the right leg and released. Evelyn Griffin, 33, East Gulf, was treated and released after being thrown across the street. Evelyn’s husband Charles Griffin was arrested for drunkenness and jailed in Raleigh County, as was William Thomas Rhodell on a drunk charge. State Police continue investigation.

Reservist Dies In Maneuver On Hill
A Marine reservist was killed and two others wounded when live ammunition from an M60 machine gun was accidentally mixed with dummy rounds during a night guerrilla training on a wooded hill in Haddam Connecticut. Pfc Edward N Richter 22 of Guilford died of a heart wound while Pfc Thaddeus Kloss 22 of Fairfield was critically wounded and Pfc Theodore J Karaska 22 of Stratford was grazed and treated. An investigating officer cited accidental mixing of live and dummy ammunition in a supply area during a weekend exercise in a state forest. The incident occurred pre dawn as the three stood in the darkness. The incident followed by a United Fund drive update noting $24 336 in contributions at noon today with extended hours at Beckley Hardware and a ninth reporting day planned.
