Pride in West Virginia marks regional garden meeting at Mullens

Mullens hosts the Appalachian Region West Virginia Garden Club as members from over 20 clubs gather under the theme Pride in West Virginia. Mrs. E J McQuail opens the day with encouragement for active participation. Mrs. W Harrell Wilson of Greenville S C heads the afternoon program Design in Good Taste. An exhibit by Mrs John D Farmer highlights state industries through miniatures while fall fashions are shown. About 100 attendees enjoy table decorations and a long luncheon display featuring miner gear and coal symbols.

Republican Meet In Oak Hill Today

Samuel Jack Settle dies. funeral set at Robson Church

Samuel Jack Settle of Robson, longtime Robson grocer for 32 years, died after a yearlong illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at Robson Church of Christ with Rev. Herman Williams officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery. Surviving are wife Lena. five daughters including Cora Davis and Blanche Wiseman. five sons including James and Archie. two stepsons, a stepdaughter, a sister, a brother, 28 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. burial in Robson.

Colcord Presbyterian Church hosts Rev John Ralfs visit

Area residents burned out at the Colcord Presbyterian Church Thursday night to welcome the Rev John Ralfs of Pennsylvania who arrived Wednesday to visit with the idea of perhaps becoming the pastor. A social hour followed the worship service at the Upper Building.

Thefts Reported In Mullens Area Over Weekend

Three thefts were reported around Mullens over the weekend. Coal operator George Jenkins lost 750 dynamite caps and about 100 feet of copper feeder cable from Harmca mine, a loss about 500. Princeton resident Fred Pennington reported burglars took a tan sport coat brown slacks and four ties from his car near South Mullens playground. Cash Sparks of Simann found his 1952 pickup after it had gone missing and ended up overturned at New Richmond.

Quiet Day Observed By WSCS At Long Branch Church

The Women's Society of Christian Service will observe a Quiet Day on October 25 at Long Branch Methodist Church to mark the Week of Prayer and Self Denial. Services start at 10 a.m. and run into the afternoon. On October 30 a WSCS program at the same church will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Jesse Conley of Oceana, 44, was treated at Wyoming General Hospital after his left foot was caught between two coal cars at the Lynco mine where he works as a motorman.

Al Meadows Elected District Chairman at WV Convention

Mrs Al Meadows of Rupert was elected district chairman at the fourth annual Southern District Junior Department convention of the West Virginia Federation of Women s Clubs held in Hinton. PTA Plans Halloween Carnival at Mount View

Mount View PTA held its second meeting at the school with Titian Parotari presiding. Gilbert Pettry led devotionals and the secretary reported 205 members and a recent PTA supper netting $100. Plans were made for a November 1 Halloween carnival and updates on a hard top basketball court project costing $790. The next meeting was scheduled for November 19.

Knights of Pythias Grand Lodge held a meeting in Parkersburg to fill the vacancy left by the death of C F Johnson grand chancellor. Grand secretary W T Price of Oak Hill reports district deputies appointed, including H VanCamp for a district covering Greenbrier Summers Raleigh and Fayette Counties. A C F Johnson Class will begin in all thirteen districts before December 31. The next Grand Lodge session is tentatively set for June in Elkins.

Pineville Man Survives 1957 Sedan Crash

State Police said Bill Weaver of Pineville escaped with minor injuries after his 1957 sedan failed a curve on SHH Run, overturned several times, and skidded 83 yards on the road shoulder before overturning, according to Trooper Wiley Hersman.

New Trial Set For Tiz Jones In Monroe County Court

A new trial for Clarence Tiz Jones evangelist was set for Nov. 4 in Monroe County Circuit Court by Judge Nickell Kramer. The court canceled the April conviction and sentence and Jones was released, but charges against him and James Huffman were re indicted by the grand jury. Several other felonies and related cases were docketed, with nine men indicted for escapes from a convict detail at Sweet Springs. A Town of Alderson case yielded a $750 verdict for Smith after police officer Miller struck him. Court adjourned to Oct. 2.

Acting Principal Named at Whitesville Elementary School

Edith Shafer was named acting principal of Sylvester Elementary by the Boone County Board of Education after transferring Robert Peal from Sylvester to Whitesville Elementary and Junior High. Frank Titlow remains in satisfactory condition at Oak Hill Hospital after a heart attack last Thursday.
